Different amputation levels in leg amputation

Are you looking for clear information on amputation levels because you, a family member or a patient will soon undergo or has undergone an amputation? Then you have come to the right place at Amputee Care Center.

Amputation levels may sound technical, but they are essential for understanding exactly what happens during an amputation and which type of leg prosthesis is best suited. Whether you want to know what the difference is between a toe, foot, lower leg, upper leg or hip amputation, or what impact the amputation level has on the use of the prosthesis: we give you clear, reliable explanations tailored to your information needs.

Amputation levels of leg prostheses - facts

At the Amputee Care Center (ACC), we work with a variety of experts because each type of leg amputation requires a specialised approach. Our orthopaedic technologists therefore specialise in prostheses especially for one or more specific amputation levels. We create tailor-made solutions tailored to each patient's functional needs, medical context and lifestyle. We work closely with surgeons, rehabilitation doctors, physiotherapists, general practitioners and nurses to provide the best possible prosthetic care, from preoperative guidance to active reintegration.

Foot and partial lower leg amputations

Amputations of the forefoot, midfoot or heel (such as Lisfranc, Chopart or Syme) are common in diabetes, vascular disease or trauma. Despite preserving much of the leg, balance and roll-off can be severely impaired.

Our foot prosthesis solutions:

  • Orthopaedic shoes with foot replacement modules
  • Silicone systems for aesthetics and functionality
  • Dynamic foot prostheses with shock absorption and roll-off support

Goal: maintain mobility, optimise pressure distribution, and enable active life.

Lower leg amputation (transtibial amputation)

In a lower leg amputation, the lower leg is removed between the knee and the ankle. This level allows many functional possibilities, provided the right prosthesis is used.

Special prosthetic solutions at ACC:

  • Lightweight liners for comfort and skin protection
  • Energy-generating feet for active or sporty users
  • Microprocessor-controlled feet that adapt to terrain and pace
  • 3D-printed customised sleeves and liners. Unique covers.
  • One-day visit fitting - your leg prosthesis ready in 1 day.

Goal: natural gait pattern, pain-free walking, return to work and hobbies.

Knee exarticulation amputation level

This involves removing the leg at the level of the knee joint while retaining the entire femur. The advantage: a well-bearing stump end and stable prosthetic placement.

Advantages of this level of amputation:

  • Strong, stable stump
  • Less wear and tear on the hip
  • Often better weight distribution in the prosthesis

ACC prosthetists tailor the knee hinge to your degree of mobility: from mechanically locked to microprocessor-controlled.

Upper leg amputation (transfemoral amputation)

In this amputation, the leg is removed between hip and knee. The knee and foot function must be completely taken over by the prosthesis.

High-tech solutions at ACC:

  • Electronic knees and feet that anticipate movements
  • Intuitive knee joints with fall detection and kick function
  • Prosthetic sleeves with vacuum anchoring for optimal fit
  • 3D printed customised sleeves and liners. Unique covers.
  • One-day visit fitting - your leg prosthesis ready in 1 day.

Our collaboration with your rehabilitation team ensures safe training and maximum support.

Hip exarticulation and hemipelvectomy

These are rare and radical amputations in which the entire leg, sometimes even including part of the pelvis, is removed. They require highly specialised solutions.

What we offer:

  • Custom-made prostheses with hip joint, knee and foot component
  • Lightweight, modular constructions
  • Intensive guidance and long-term follow-up

Our experts work with different component manufacturers to combine comfort, safety and mobility with realistic goals tailored to the person behind the amputation.
