A forearm prosthesis helps you get your life back on track. Did you know that there are forearm prostheses that allow you to hold objects again, and even prostheses that allow you to write or play the guitar again? At Amputee Care Centre (ACC), we have different types of forearm prostheses: passive, mechanical, myoelectric and bionic models. This means there is always a prosthesis that suits your lifestyle and goals.

Would you like to know more about our forearm prostheses? Book a free, no-obligation introductory meeting. We will take the time to listen to your story, answer all your questions and tell you more about the options available in your situation.

Prosthesis after a forearm amputation

In a forearm amputation, also known as a transradial amputation, the arm is removed up to the elbow. A forearm prosthesis often replaces the entire forearm, but it can also only replace the wrist and hand function. At ACC, a team of experienced prosthetists is ready to work with your doctor and other healthcare providers to find a solution that suits you.

After an amputation, a practice prosthesis is often used first. This can be done almost immediately after the stump has healed. At ACC, we ensure that it fits your stump and your personal needs perfectly. We also teach you how to use and maintain the prosthesis correctly. Once your stump has taken its final shape and everything has healed properly, we make the final prosthesis. This can be a passive, mechanical, myoelectric or bionic prosthesis, depending on your wishes and goals. This is often done in stages.

Passive forearm prostheses

Would you like a prosthesis that looks natural and helps maintain the symmetry of your body? Then a passive prosthesis is a good solution. We also refer to these as cosmetic prostheses. These prostheses are often made of silicone to create a realistic appearance. Although these prostheses cannot perform dynamic movements, they do help you with simple tasks. Think of holding and stabilising cutlery or finding balance.

Mechanical forearm prostheses

A mechanical or body-powered forearm prosthesis can be moved using your own body strength. This works with a cable and harness mechanism controlled by your movements. For example, you can use the gripping function by moving your arm forwards or backwards. This movement tightens the cable that opens or closes your hand. A mechanical arm prosthesis is robust and therefore a reliable solution for everyday activities. A mechanical prosthesis can also be a good solution if you do heavy work.

Myoelectric forearm prostheses

Myoelectric forearm prostheses are advanced prostheses that detect muscle signals via electrodes. The prosthesis then uses this to control realistic movements. With these forearm prostheses, you can choose from different types of hands or specialised attachments. We customise the sleeves and attachments with our 3D printer. This allows us to design a prosthesis that fits perfectly.

Bionic forearm prostheses

Like myoelectric prostheses, bionic forearm prostheses detect muscle signals to control realistic movements. The difference is that bionic prostheses use multiple sensors and sometimes even tactile feedback for even more natural and precise movements. They are lightweight and comfortable to wear, giving you maximum control and flexibility.

At ACC, we are experts in bionic arm prostheses for active young people and adults. One of the most groundbreaking developments in recent years, in our opinion, is the Hero Arm from Open Bionics. This is the first clinically approved, 3D-printed bionic arm with a design of your choice, such as a child's favourite superhero.

Hero Arm: a futuristic prosthesis

The Hero Arm is a futuristic prosthesis designed for young people and adults with a forearm amputation. It is a lightweight, responsive and adaptable prosthesis that combines the latest technologies with style and personality.

The advantages of a Hero Arm:

  • Multi-grip functionality: Grasping objects, typing, writing, cycling, playing video games. The Hero Arm's various grips and advanced functions make it all possible.
  • Intuitive muscle control: The Hero Arm really feels like an extension of your own body. EMG sensors detect the muscle signals in the stump, to which the prosthesis then responds immediately.
  • Lightweight and comfortable: Despite the advanced technology in this prosthesis, it is surprisingly light and ergonomic. This makes it ideal for everyday use.
  • Customisable design: With a Hero Arm, you become the superhero of your own story, as you have a wide choice of covers with themes such as Star Wars, Marvel or Disney. Thanks to a smart magnetic system, you can change the covers in no time.

At ACC, we have extensive experience with the Hero Arm. It is not a standard prosthesis, but a piece of advanced technology that only comes into its own with the right care, guidance and adjustment. We are happy to help you get every detail right, so that it becomes a life-changing solution you can rely on.

Why choose Amputee Care Centre?

A forearm prosthesis only becomes truly functional when it fits the wearer perfectly. That is why we combine the best custom-made prostheses with our expertise and personal guidance. You can come to us for advice even before your amputation, and we will remain involved long after your amputation.

Would you like to experience for yourself what is possible? At our head office in Genk, you can view, try out and compare different forearm prostheses. This will give you a good idea of the differences and help you discover which solution best suits your needs.

Frequently asked questions about forearm prostheses

Do you have questions about forearm prostheses? We have compiled a list of questions that we are frequently asked. If your question is not listed, please contact us, as we are happy to assist you. During a free, no-obligation introductory meeting, you will have the opportunity to ask all your questions, and we will work with you to find the best solution for your situation.

What types of forearm prostheses are available?

At ACC, we offer four types of forearm prostheses:

  • Passive prostheses: natural appearance, easy to use.
  • Mechanical prostheses: robust and reliable, powered by body strength.
  • Myoelectric prostheses: respond to muscle signals via electrodes.
  • Bionic prostheses: highly advanced, with sensors and sometimes tactile feedback.
What is the difference between a myoelectric and a bionic prosthesis?

Both use muscle signals to control movements. However, a bionic prosthesis goes further with multiple sensors, better precision and sometimes even tactile feedback. This makes the control feel even more natural and intuitive.

Can I play sports or make music again with a prosthesis?

Yes, depending on the type of prosthesis, there are many possibilities. With myoelectric and bionic models, for example, you can write, cycle or even play an instrument again. Thanks to customised solutions and 3D-printed attachments, the prosthesis can be tailored precisely to your hobbies and work.

What makes the Hero Arm special?

The Hero Arm is a lightweight, responsive bionic arm with multi-grip functions, muscle-controlled operation and a customisable design. It combines advanced technology with personal style, allowing you to choose covers with themes such as Star Wars, Marvel or Disney.

Is a passive prosthesis useful if it cannot move?

Yes, a passive prosthesis is particularly suitable for maintaining symmetry and performing simple tasks, such as holding cutlery, a telephone or a cup of coffee. These prostheses are often made of silicone to create a realistic appearance.

How do I know which prosthesis is best for me?

That depends on your goals, lifestyle and physical condition. During an introductory meeting, we take the time to listen to your story, discuss your wishes and determine together which solution suits you best.

What happens after my amputation?

After an underarm amputation, we will discuss the options with you, your doctor and our team. You can often receive advice from ACC before the amputation, and we will also provide you with long-term support during your rehabilitation and prosthesis use after the operation.

Are prostheses always custom-made?

Yes, every prosthesis is customised. Using modern techniques such as 3D printing, we ensure that the socket, hand or attachments fit your body and activities perfectly.

How heavy is a bionic prosthesis?

Bionic prostheses, including the Hero Arm, are surprisingly lightweight and ergonomically designed. This makes them comfortable for everyday use.

Why should I choose the Amputee Care Centre?

Because we do more than just supply prostheses. We offer personal guidance, customisation and remain involved even after the prosthesis has been fitted. This way, you can be sure that you will receive a solution that truly suits you.

How long will it take before I can use my prosthesis?

The timeline varies per person and type of prosthesis. The process often starts with the creation of a custom-made socket, followed by fitting and adjustment. For simple models, this can be done within a few weeks, while an advanced bionic prosthesis requires more time and guidance. We guide you through every step, so you can be sure that everything fits properly.

Are forearm prostheses covered by health insurance?

Yes, in many cases, (part of) the costs for a prosthesis are covered by health insurance. We are happy to help you apply for the correct reimbursements and ensure that you know exactly what is possible in your situation.
