Prosthesis after an upper arm amputation

In an upper arm amputation, also known as a transhumeral amputation in medical terms, the part between the shoulder and the elbow is removed. This results in the loss of elbow, wrist and hand function. A prosthesis can (partially) take over these functions.

Is the shoulder also amputated? Then we call this a shoulder disarticulation. These amputations are rare and require a highly advanced prosthetic solution, as the functions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand must be replaced. At ACC, we have a team of prosthetists who specialise in this field. Using innovative prosthetic components, they can put together a prosthesis for you that gives you comfort, stability and freedom of movement.

Body-powered upper arm prostheses

A body-powered upper arm prosthesis is mechanically operated using cables and body movements. You make certain movements with your shoulders or upper body to use your elbow or hand. Think, for example, of moving your shoulder blades towards and away from each other. This causes the hand of the prosthesis to open and close to grasp an object. These prostheses increase your independence and improve your body's balance.

Myoelectric arm prostheses

Myoelectric arm prostheses are electronically controlled by muscle activity. Electrodes in the prosthesis socket pick up these signals and use them to control the prosthesis. This allows you to open and close your hand, for example. Using these muscle signals results in a high degree of accuracy and makes the controls feel intuitive. You can also perform many different actions with it, such as zipping up your coat, writing or typing, and doing sports or creative activities. It does take a little more practice to use the right muscle control and sufficient muscle tension. At ACC, a whole team is ready to guide you through this, so that operating the prosthesis will feel like second nature within a few weeks.

Bionic or robotic arms

Bionic arm prostheses are an advanced variant of myoelectric arm prostheses. These are the new generation of prostheses that not only detect muscle (myo) movements, but also interpret nerve signals. This enables them to perform even more natural and complex movements. Think, for example, of moving the thumb and fingers separately.

The creation of a bionic arm prosthesis is always custom work. At ACC, we always follow a careful process to ensure that you receive a perfect, custom-made arm prosthesis. We then work with you during an extensive testing phase to train you in how to best use the arm. For children, we make this fun and accessible through play.

Upper arm prostheses for children and young people

Fitting upper arm prostheses for children and young people requires a different approach. They grow quickly and often use their prostheses in playful or sporting situations. At ACC, we offer a wide range of options that take into account the child's growth and changing needs. We make training with the prosthesis fun and accessible with playful activities. We also support children and young people with the mental aspect, so that they do not see wearing a prosthesis as a hindrance, but rather as a superpower.

Why choose ACC?

An upper arm prosthesis is custom-made, and at ACC we know how important the details are. We look beyond just the technology: we listen to your story and your unique situation. We then design a prosthesis with different components, attachments and accessories to ensure that it fits you perfectly. Together, we will then train extensively with the prosthesis, teaching you how to use all its features and get your life back on track.

We believe it is important that you are not alone, both before and after the amputation. That is why we guide you from the first consultation until well after the delivery of your prosthesis. We work closely with your doctors, therapists and (if you wish) your loved ones. This ensures that you receive the right support, both physically and mentally. Our goal is for you to be able to move with confidence and enjoyment again.

Frequently asked questions about upper arm prostheses

Would you like to know more about upper arm prostheses? We have answered a number of questions for you on this page. Is your question not listed? Please contact us and schedule a free, no-obligation introductory meeting. You will have plenty of time to ask your questions, and we will work with you to find a solution that suits your lifestyle and wishes.

What is the difference between an upper arm prosthesis and a lower arm prosthesis?

A forearm prosthesis is used for amputations below the elbow. An upper arm prosthesis is suitable for amputations above the elbow or even the shoulder. Because an upper arm prosthesis has to replace more functions, the technology is often more advanced.

How do I determine which upper arm prosthesis is best for me?

We do this together during an intake interview. We discuss your daily activities, work, hobbies and goals. Based on this, we determine together which type of components, attachments and accessories suit you best. We offer a wide range of prosthetic components to choose from. For example, would you prefer a high-tech model (such as the Hero arm) or do you want special tools for work and sports? Anything is possible!

What is the difference between a body-powered and a myoelectric prosthesis?

A body-powered prosthesis works with cables and body movements. For example, you use shoulder movements to open or close the hand. A myoelectric prosthesis works on muscle signals that are picked up by electrodes. This allows you to control the prosthesis electronically and accurately.

What is a bionic arm prosthesis?

A bionic prosthesis is the latest generation of arm prosthesis. It not only picks up muscle signals, but also nerve signals. This enables natural, fluid movements, such as moving the fingers and thumb separately.

How long will it take before I can use my prosthesis?

That varies from person to person. After the initial fitting, there is a training period during which you learn how to use the prosthesis. Often, you will be able to perform everyday tasks independently within a few weeks. Our team will guide you every step of the way.

Is it difficult to learn how to use a myoelectric or bionic prosthesis?

It takes some practice to develop the right muscle tension and control, but with guidance from our therapists and prosthetists, this can usually be achieved quickly. We train at your pace and adjust the prosthesis where necessary.

Can I play sports or work with an upper arm prosthesis?

Yes, certainly. Many people actively use their prosthesis at work, during sports or hobbies. We can add accessories or attachments that are specifically suited to your activities.

What is a hybrid upper arm prosthesis?

A hybrid prosthesis combines different technologies. For example, the elbow can be operated mechanically, while the hand is controlled myo-electrically. This provides extra flexibility and control.

What about the costs and reimbursement of an upper arm prosthesis?

In most cases, a prosthesis is (partially or completely) covered by your health insurer. We are happy to help you apply for the correct reimbursement and submit the necessary documents.

What is a Neuralink prosthesis and is it already available?

Neuralink prostheses are a new development whereby the prosthesis can be controlled by thoughts. This technology is still under development and not yet on the market, but we are closely monitoring these developments.

Can I have my prosthesis adjusted if my situation changes?

Yes, your prosthesis is custom-made, but it can always be adjusted or expanded later. For example, if you want more control, start doing different activities, or if your body changes.

How can I schedule an introductory meeting?

You can easily contact us via the website or by telephone. We would be happy to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation to discuss your situation and determine which solution is best for you.

Can I try out the prosthesis before making a decision?

Yes, at ACC it is possible to test different types of prostheses during the fitting and training phase. This allows you to experience for yourself which solution feels most comfortable and best suits your daily activities.

What if my prosthesis does not fit properly or causes discomfort?

Then we will adjust it, of course. Comfort is essential for the proper use of the prosthesis. Together, we will examine the fit of the socket, the adjustment and the weight, so that the prosthesis fits comfortably and becomes an effortless part of your daily life.
