Our approach to sports prostheses

Every sport places unique demands on your body and therefore also on your prosthesis. Sprinting, for example, requires explosive power and resilience, cycling requires stable power transfer, and swimming requires water-resistant materials that do not slow you down. That is why we always start with a comprehensive analysis:

  • Medical background: amputation level, health status and any complaints.
  • Sporting goals: recreational exercise, building fitness or competitive performance.
  • Physical capabilities: strength, balance, coordination and mobility.

We are completely supplier-independent. This means that we are not tied to one brand or type of sports prosthesis, but work with you to choose the best solution. Thanks to test models in our lab, you can try out different options before we make a final choice. This way, you immediately know how a blade or cycling prosthesis feels and what suits you best.

Gait and walking analysis in our sports lab

A sports prosthesis only really comes to life when in motion. In our specialised gait lab, we measure your performance in detail. Using high-speed cameras, sensors and force plates, we analyse how you walk, jump or cycle.

We map out aspects such as:

  • Energy efficiency: how much power is lost during each movement?
  • Stability and balance: how stable are you when pushing off, turning or landing?
  • Power distribution: how is your energy distributed between your prosthesis and your body?

Thanks to these insights, we can adjust your prosthesis perfectly. The result? An aid that is not only comfortable, but also supports your performance. Whether you want to sprint faster, cycle longer or exercise pain-free: we ensure that your equipment works with you instead of against you.

Our expertise by discipline

Running & sprinting

A running blade or sprint prosthesis gives you the chance to enjoy speed and freedom again. We tailor the length, stiffness and adjustment entirely to your running style and goals. From recreational jogging in the park to top-level sport on the track: every step should feel efficient and natural. In our lab, you can try out different blades so that together we can find the perfect balance between strength and comfort.

Cycling & para-cycling

Cycling and para-cycling require extreme precision. For leg prostheses, we analyse your pedalling frequency and sitting position to ensure that every pedal stroke is efficient. For hand bikes, we build systems that are fully tailored to your sitting position, strength and aerodynamics. Whether you cycle on a road bike, mountain bike or compete in a triathlon, we ensure that you can perform stably, comfortably and with maximum power transfer.

Swimming & water sports

Swimming with an amputation requires specific solutions. With water-resistant swimming prostheses and adjustments, we ensure that you can push off powerfully, turn and stay balanced in the water. For sports such as kayaking and rowing, we also develop customised solutions that support your stability and coordination. This allows you to enjoy the water without any hindrance.

Team sports

Football, basketball and volleyball are all about agility, speed and teamwork. With dynamic sports prostheses and shock absorption, we ensure that you can jump, turn and land safely. This gives you the confidence to move freely and be part of the game again, without fear of instability or injury.

Winter sports

Winter sports have different requirements: control, stability and strength on uneven terrain. For skiing and snowboarding, we use special coupling systems and knee prostheses with suspension and rotation mechanisms. Our expertise in carbon and prepreg technology makes your equipment strong and light. So you can hit the slopes with confidence.

Fitness & CrossFit

Strength training and CrossFit are all about stability and functional movements. We develop functional sports prostheses that allow you to safely squat, deadlift or perform explosive movements. This allows you to build strength and fitness without limitations, and train just as hard as any other athlete in the gym.

Support during training and competition

A good prosthesis is just the beginning. We also support you during the next steps of your sporting journey:

  • On-site service: during training camps or competitions, we are on hand to adjust or repair prostheses immediately.
  • Fine-tuning in practice: we analyse your performance during sports and make adjustments where necessary.
  • Support for coaches: we advise trainers on how best to deal with your prosthesis in schedules and techniques.

This means you are never on your own, even at international competitions. You focus on performing, we make sure your equipment works optimally.

What is a sports prosthesis and how does it differ from an everyday prosthesis?

A sports prosthesis is specially designed for performance, strength and dynamism. Whereas a daily prosthesis focuses on comfort and stability when walking, a sports prosthesis is made for impact: running, jumping, cycling or swimming. They are usually lighter, more dynamic and often made of carbon. Thanks to their energy storage and rebound, they support your performance, but are less suitable for everyday life.

How does a running blade work when sprinting or jogging?

A running blade stores energy when your foot lands and releases that energy when you push off. This makes your movements springy and efficient. Even a small adjustment in stiffness or angle can make a big difference. That's why we always do a gait analysis to tailor the blade perfectly to your body and running style.

How much does a sports prosthesis cost and what about reimbursement?

The costs vary depending on the type of prosthesis and discipline. A recreational walking prosthesis is often less expensive than a specialised sprint blade or cycling prosthesis. The standard reimbursement usually only covers everyday prostheses. For sports prostheses, there are sometimes exceptions through sports funds, insurance or sponsorship. We are happy to assist you in exploring the financing options.

Can I do multiple sports with one sports prosthesis?

That depends on the sport. A running prosthesis can also be useful for fitness, but less so for team sports or swimming. We often work with modular systems where parts can be exchanged. This gives you flexibility without having to get a completely new prosthesis every time.

How does gait analysis help with sporting performance?

High-tech measurements allow us to see exactly how you move. When walking, we look at push-off, landing and energy loss. When cycling, we measure pedalling frequency, power and posture. We use this data to fine-tune your prosthesis and improve your technique. This allows you to exercise more efficiently and with less risk of injury.

Are there special cycling prostheses for amputees?

Yes, definitely. For leg amputations, there are prostheses with adapted click pedals and angles for optimal power transfer. For arm amputations, we make steering or grip adjustments. With hand bikes, we customise everything: seating position, aerodynamics and power. This makes a huge difference for both recreational cyclists and competitive para-cyclists.

Can I participate in official competitions with a sports prosthesis?

Absolutely. Many para-athletes worldwide participate in official competitions with sports prostheses. However, rules set by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and other federations apply. We ensure that your prosthesis meets the standards and guide you during competitions so that your equipment does not pose an obstacle.

How does the on-site service work at international competitions?

Our team travels with you and is on hand with spare parts and expertise. If a fitting is damaged or comes loose during a competition, we intervene immediately. This gives you peace of mind: you don't have to worry about equipment, just your performance.

Which brands and technologies do you use?

We are completely supplier-neutral and work with top brands such as Össur, Ottobock and Freedom Innovations. We also use our own innovations, such as 3D-printed parts and carbon prepreg technology. The most important thing is that the technology suits your body, sport and ambitions.

How do I start the process of obtaining a sports or cycling prosthesis?

The process starts with an intake interview. This is followed by an analysis in our sports lab. We test different models, make adjustments and tailor everything to your goals. You will often feel a difference after the first visit. Do you already have a prosthesis? Then you can get a free second opinion from us to see if there is room for improvement.
