Leg prostheses for children and teenagers

When your child needs a (new) leg prosthesis, there is a lot on your mind as a parent. Above all, you want your child to get the very best, to develop optimally, to feel good and to move freely and safely. You want your child to be able to participate in all that life has to offer. At the Amputee Care Center (ACC), we are here to support you in this. We do this with total customised care and by designing and making a leg prosthesis that is completely tailored to your child or teenager's activities.

Did you know that several prosthesis users have received their prosthesis at Spronken since childhood - and are now over 50 years old? That lifelong bond says it all and we are incredibly proud of it!

Our paediatric orthopaedics team welcomes you

Every child or teenager with an amputation is different and so every child also has different needs and wishes. At Amputee Care Center, we therefore customise lower leg and upper leg prostheses to fit your child's life stage and activities. We listen to your child and you as parents and together we look for the best solution. Our paediatric orthopaedics (paediatric prosthesis) team supervises children with leg or foot amputations. We make leg prostheses for babies from their first steps and accompany every child as they grow into the most advanced bionic solutions, and we are proud of that!

Children's leg prosthesis that grows with them

Children grow quickly and a prosthesis must therefore be able to grow with them. At Amputee Care Center, we therefore make leg prostheses for children that are flexible and can take a beating. This gives your child complete freedom to play and discover new things. At ACC, we see that, especially in children, a well-tailored prosthesis really enriches their lives! Not only physically, but also mentally: we see children who feel stronger, more confident and happier with the right leg prosthesis.

Does your child already have a leg prosthesis, but do you doubt whether it is optimally adjusted, whether the socket fits perfectly, whether your child has the right prosthetic knee or foot for maximum development, or do you just want to know if more is possible? We are happy to take a look with you and are ready for a free second opinion. We actively consider every stage of a child's development.

Customised pediatric prosthetic leg

Every pediatric prosthetic leg we make at ACC is fully personalised, from the initial measurements to the maintenance of the prosthesis. With us, every journey starts with an open introductory meeting. We would like to get to know you. Here, we certainly don't only look at the medical situation, but also at who he or she is as a person. What are his or her hobbies, sports, what are expectations, dreams or concerns?

We find that this first meeting is reassuring for many parents. There is space to ask questions and share emotions. Together, we will then explore what is possible, which is often more than you think! We fully explain to you and your child how the process works, what possibilities there are and what you can expect in the short and long term. If required, psychosocial support is also available in our prosthesis centre.

Repair and renewal of children's prosthesis

At Amputee Care Center we have experience with all possible types of amputations and prostheses. Every child or teenager can come to us for the right prosthesis and prosthetic support to suit their unique situation. Parents can come to us for advice, an initial prosthesis, a repair, revision or renewal of a child's prosthesis. We examine when your child is entitled to reimbursement for a new prosthesis and which innovative components are among the options.

Amputation levels determine the design of a child's leg prosthesis

Your child's amputation level largely determines how the child's leg prosthesis looks and functions. Each level affects how your child moves, how much support is needed and which joints or muscle functions can still be used. We therefore carefully tailor the design to the length of the remaining leg, the position of the joints and what your child can physically handle - so that the prosthesis not only fits well, but also helps your child move naturally, play actively, play sports and participate confidently.

We design and make children's leg prostheses for every level of amputation, including:

  • (Partial) foot amputations in children.
  • Transtibial amputation (lower leg) in children.
  • Knee exarticulation in children, where the lower leg is amputated at the level of the knee joint.
  • Transfemoral amputation (upper leg) in children.
  • Hip exarticulation and haemipelvectomy in children.
  • Rotationplasty in children.

Sizing of children's leg prosthesis

After the introduction, the sizing is done. We use advanced technology, such as 3D scanning. This allows us to quickly, playfully and completely painlessly map out the shape of the stump. On this basis, we design a leg prosthesis that fits the body perfectly. A perfectly fitting prosthetic socket and well-aligned prosthesis prevents pain points, skin problems and misalignment, but also allows your child to move more naturally.

We take everything into account when designing your child's leg prosthesis. Think about the child's weight, the expected growth curve, the activity level and movements your child often makes. Together, we make the right considerations in this.

Cooperation with physiotherapists and doctors

At Amputee Care Center, we believe in cooperation. That is why we like to work closely with paediatric rehabilitation physicians, physiotherapists, physiotherapists, home nurses, occupational therapists, teachers at school or in the gym, trainers at sports clubs, remedial educationalists, paediatricians, psychologists and with your child's GP. We make sure that everyone involved in your child's care and development is aware of what is needed and how, together, we can bring out the best in your child.

Do you yourself have a care provider your child feels comfortable with? Or does your child need special support at school? We share our points of interest, but also like to think with you about resources or explanations for classmates.

Gait analysis in leg prosthesis child

Measuring is knowing! The scientific mapping of how your child walks with his or her leg prosthesis is important for optimising the gait pattern and the unrolling of the foot while walking. In our in-house digital gait lab, we therefore perform gait and gait analysis as standard (at no additional cost to the patient) to measure the gait pattern. We do this using sensors and cameras, among other things, to map your child's movements. A gait and gait analysis we to optimise the use of the child's leg prosthesis and prevent injuries when used intensively. This is especially important for growing children, because the better the leg prosthesis is adjusted for unique use, the better the balance, posture and muscle development will be in the long term.

A good gait ensures a better quality of life. When we optimise the prosthesis with this, children suffer less fatigue and can move more freely. A gait analysis is completely free of charge at Amputee Care Center.

Care for parents

As a parent of a child with a leg prosthesis, you have a great responsibility. After all, the parents ultimately make the choices, arrange the appointments, comfort, motivate and reassure their child. At Amputee Care Center, we understand very well that this can be hard, even as a parent. That is why we are here for you too! We give you clear explanations, support and a fixed point of contact. We are always ready to answer your questions or simply listen.

Do you have questions about reimbursement, financial intervention, reimbursement or administrative procedures? No worries, we will help you with the complete file. Most children's prostheses are reimbursed in Belgium and the Netherlands via the mutual health insurance or health insurance fund. We are recognised by all Belgian health insurance funds, health insurance funds, RIZIV mutualities and most Dutch health insurances. We take care of this for you and inform you about the possibilities, so you do not have to worry about this.

Frequently asked questions about leg prostheses for children

Still have questions about leg prostheses for your child? We have collected some frequently asked questions at Amputee Care Center for you below. Is your question not among them? Then contact us. We are happy to be at your service!

How to compare orthopaedic companies for children's orthopaedics and prosthetics?

If you are looking for a good prosthesis for your child, pay special attention to whether the orthopaedic company has a lot of experience with paediatric orthopaedics, children and growth prostheses. Ask about their 3D printing technology, being supported by an in-house measurement and gait analysis centre, a modern orthopaedic workshop, offering personalised total care, working with paediatric rehabilitation teams and how they handle adjustments to the prosthesis as your child grows. Choose a paediatric orthopaedic prosthetics team with experience, like the one at the Amputee Care Center, that really guides you and your child. Not just technically, but also practically and emotionally.

Why choose the paediatric orthopaedics team at Amputee Care Center (ACC)?

The Amputee Care Center, part of Spronken, is the specialist in paediatric arm and leg prostheses in the Benelux. Our team, including prosthetists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists, designs modular, growth-friendly leg prostheses using advanced technologies such as 3D printing and carbon techniques to create advanced prosthetic sleeves. We have more than 60 years of experience, are an industry leader with our own orthopaedic prosthesis workshop and digital gait and gait analysis centre where children with prostheses can receive continuous treatment as they grow. We assist children from baby to adulthood and provide total care with follow-up tailored to the needs of the child and his or her parents.

How often should my child's leg prosthesis be adjusted?

Children grow quickly, so a child's leg prosthesis needs to be checked and adjusted regularly. Depending on the growth spurt, this may be necessary every few months, especially in the first years of life. At the Amputee Care Center, we schedule check-ups and make sure the prosthesis grows with you, so your child can always move comfortably and safely. As a prosthesis wearer, you can always come to us for optimisation of your prosthesis. You really don't have to wait for your regular check-up appointment, in case of doubts or problems. Contact us. We are easily accessible.

Is a leg prosthesis painful for children?

A well-fitting children's leg prosthesis should not cause pain. At Amputee Care Center, we pay great attention to the design and fit to avoid friction and pressure points. Of course, children can get used to the feeling in the beginning, but our specialists orthopaedic instrument makers and prosthesis providers will guide you step by step and are ready to help with any questions or problems.

Can my child just play and play sports with a leg prosthesis?

Absolutely! Our children's leg prostheses are made of lightweight and durable materials that can take a beating. This allows your child to move freely and carefree in everyday activities. Occasional sports are no problem either, but if your child often plays the same sport, we recommend getting a specialised sports prosthesis made for this purpose. This not only makes sports easier, but is also safer.

How long will it take my child to get used to the new leg prosthesis?

This varies from child to child. Most children get used to a new leg prosthesis within a few weeks to a few months, depending on their age, amputation level and motivation. In the beginning, it mainly involves practising stepping, finding balance and building confidence, often under the guidance of a paediatric physiotherapist or paediatric rehabilitation team.

What makes Spronken's Amputee Care Center (ACC) different from other companies is that from the very first moment, we design your child's leg prosthesis with science-based digital gait analysis, AI artificial intelligence, have an in-house 3D printing lab for making precision sleeves, and we work with multidisciplinary teams that collaborate around your child. We actively involve your child in the process, use light and child-friendly materials, and provide a warm, playful environment where measuring and habituation happen naturally. As a result, children feel safe, understood and motivated, which often makes getting used to the prosthesis faster and more pleasant.

What if my child is uncooperative or feels insecure with the leg prosthesis?

This is very understandable and is more common than you think. At Amputee Care Center, we involve parents, therapists and, where necessary, psychologists to create a safe and supportive environment. We encourage and help your child build self-confidence step by step, so that the prosthesis becomes a natural part of life.

As a parent, what role do I play in the process?

As a parent, you are an incredibly, and perhaps the most, important link! We involve parents from the very first meeting, listen to your questions and concerns, and keep you informed every step of the way. Together, we make sure your child receives the best possible care.

Are children's leg prostheses reimbursed?

Usually yes, in Belgium and the Netherlands there are regulations for reimbursement of children's leg prostheses. Our team will be happy to help you with the administrative side and make sure you don't have any unnecessary worries about the costs.
