Femke Loisse - Coordinator Amputee Care Center

Experience?

I worked for 8 years as an occupational therapist in rehabilitation, gaining extensive knowledge about amputations, assistive devices, and support systems for people with disabilities. Since March 2023, I have been working as the coordinator for the Amputee Care Center (ACC), where I’ve had the opportunity to further expand my expertise.

For me, a prosthesis is valuable and fascinating because it can enhance or improve a person’s autonomy, as well as contribute to both physical and mental well-being. I particularly enjoy the social interactions with clients and colleagues during work and thrive in a multidisciplinary environment to resolve challenges or limitations.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

The foot—because it restores a sense of stability to the person’s life.

Fun Fact?

In my free time, I enjoy taking care of people and can often be found working in hospitality.

I also value traveling and fine dining.

Tom Daniëls - Business Unit Manager - +20 years of experience

Tom Daniëls is a physiotherapist and orthopaedic technologist-prosthetist by training and has worked for Spronken Orthopaedics since 2020. He has more than 20 years of experience in advanced prosthetic and orthotic technology. Previously, Tom worked, as a research associate in prosthetic innovations, for Össur where for many years, at home and abroad, he was involved in developing new prosthetic components and providing training for prosthetists-typists.

Today, Tom is responsible for the Amputee Care Center as Business Unit Manager at Spronken for Belgium, the Netherlands and Global. The Amputee Care Center is a unique concept with total care for prosthesis wearers, with the main objective of providing a continuum of specialised care for prosthesis users of all ages and their environment. The strength of the approach is based on a holistic holistic approach. Within the Amputee Care Center, we strongly believe in our international network of rehabilitation doctors, surgeons, therapists and social workers to help and inform prosthesis wearers and their loved ones on what may be the best solution for them. Prosthetic care at the Amputee Care Center often starts before the Amputation. Tom Daniëls is also a specialist in the One Day Visit (prosthesis done in 1 day) concept.

Why work as a prosthetist?

What sets this profession apart for me—compared to being an orthotist or wheelchair provider—is the unique relationship you build with your prosthetic patients. This bond often lasts a lifetime or spans the course of your career. It gives you the opportunity to truly understand their needs and help improve their daily life. Sometimes, it even leads to lasting friendships.

Favourite prosthetic component/product?

My favourite component is the Balance S foot. It’s an ideal foot for beginners, whether young or elderly. As the name suggests, it provides excellent stability thanks to its broad contact surface. That sense of balance and support is exactly what new prosthetic users are looking for when taking their first steps.

Fun Fact?

Travelling with my family is what we enjoy the most. One of my dreams is to one day combine my profession with my passion for travel. I’d love to spend several weeks in a developing country, providing prosthetic care to amputees in need.

Why Work as a Prosthetist?

Working as a prosthetist brings me daily satisfaction. Each prosthetic user is unique, and this means new challenges every time. I find it incredibly rewarding to see people’s happiness when they take their first steps with their new prosthesis. Moreover, much of our work involves working with our hands, which makes it quite a unique profession.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

I would pick the Direct Socket! This one-visit prosthetic solution allows us to craft a high-quality, state-of-the-art prosthetic socket in just half a day.

For above-knee amputees, this method produces a socket slightly shorter than conventional designs, offering greater freedom of movement around the hip area.

Fun Fact?

Traveling is my favorite pastime! I especially love visiting the mountains, where I can enjoy hiking and winter sports. Austria is one of our most frequent vacation destinations.

Rikus van der Meulen - Senior Clinical Prosthetics Specialist - Over 40 Years of Experience

Why Work as a Prosthetist?

I began my career crafting prosthetics from aluminum and wood. Today, in the digital age, we use scanners for measurements and digital tools for corrections. This technological evolution allows us, as healthcare professionals, to create even better prosthetics.

In short, it’s a remarkable profession where the unique combination of human care and technology has captivated me for over 40 years.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

Though it’s not a product per se, I take great satisfaction in using CAD-CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing) for creating prosthetic devices. While our profession is often described as a craft, the integration of scanners and 3D printers is revolutionizing our field, enabling us to produce even better-fitting devices efficiently. It’s simply amazing!

Fun Fact?

Besides traveling, I’m an avid sailor. The moment I step aboard my boat and let the wind carry me to a new destination, all my worries fade away.

Why Work as a Prosthetist?

What I love most about this profession are the social interactions with prosthetic users, their families, and other healthcare professionals. Additionally, I get a lot of satisfaction from the hands-on aspects of the job.

Every prosthetic user is unique. With great enthusiasm and creativity, we work tirelessly to find the best solution to meet their specific needs.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

My preference goes to microprocessor-controlled prosthetic hands. Nowadays, there are numerous models from various suppliers, some of which allow users to perform more than 30 different types of grips.

Although it may take time and effort for users to adapt fully, the long-term benefits of this innovation are significant.

Fun Fact?

I’m always on the move and have plenty of hobbies: hiking, horseback riding, diving, skiing, traveling, and more!

Why Work as a Prosthetist?

I believe building strong relationships with patients is incredibly important, and in this role, you truly develop meaningful connections. What I also love about this profession is the combination of patient interaction and hands-on work: casting, aligning, creating sockets, or making adjustments. At the same time, you need extensive product knowledge to select the right components for each patient. This unique mix feels like it’s made for me.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

The prosthetic socket itself! It’s where everything begins. I find immense satisfaction when the socket achieves a perfect fit.

As a prosthetist, you determine the prosthesis during the initial measurements: selecting the liner, suspension system, and which parts of the stump will bear or relieve pressure. These decisions require detailed conversations with the patient and are tailored to their individual needs every time.

Fun Fact?

I love visiting amusement parks, especially for the roller coasters! Sometimes, we even travel specifically to explore certain theme parks.

Why Work as a Prosthetist?

At the start of my career, I worked as a technician, crafting orthopedic devices and prosthetics. After completing my training, I found fulfillment in helping and advising clients.

It has become my passion to help patients regain mobility. I cherish a personalized approach that focuses not only on the prosthesis but also on the individual as a whole.

Helping others makes me truly happy!

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

What I find fascinating in prosthetics is optimizing the alignment of the prosthesis to suit the user’s desired functionality.

Alignment involves determining the precise positioning of all components relative to one another. Since every patient is unique, their prosthetic alignment is tailored to their specific needs and goals.

Fun Fact?

I’m blessed with 5 children, which keeps things very busy at home. After work, all my love and energy go into my family life—understandably so!

Alex Piga - Technical Prosthetics Specialist- Approximately 11 Years of Experience

What is Great About Making Prosthetics?

What sets this apart for me is knowing that we are not just producing another device on the assembly line. Each prosthetic we make is a unique piece, custom-made for the user, and we know it will improve the quality of their life. We even go the extra mile with the finishing touches to meet their specific needs as closely as possible.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

The aesthetic finishing of a prosthesis, where we replicate the healthy limb as accurately as possible using measurements and photos, creating a lifelike result.

Fun Fact?

  • A few times a year, I travel to Milan to support my favorite football team.
  • Spending quality time with my family (wife and son) is the most important thing in life to me.
  • I’m of Italian descent, so I love traveling to Italy and enjoy Italian food immensely.
  • Football and running are my hobbies.

Jan Coenen - Technical Specialist Prosthetics

What is Great About Making Prosthetics?

What I enjoy about my work is that I can finish the prosthesis entirely by hand, starting from the measurements, crafting a beautiful prosthesis for the patient on my own.

Favorite Prosthetic Component/Product?

I enjoy installing the Aqualeg cosmetic prosthetic cover. It provides an easy way to achieve a beautiful finish for the prosthesis.

Fun Fact

I am a proud father to Gust and spend most of my free time with him. Additionally, I play amateur football, and to relax, I love reading books on everything related to history.
