A unique children's prosthesis for Arthur (6 years old)

Handprothese2

Arthur, a cheerful 6-year-old boy, was struggling with daily activities and his beloved hobbies of crafting and goalkeeping. His parents therefore decided to look for a specialised prosthetic centre to give Arthur maximum opportunities to develop. In the past, Arthur had a prosthesis, but it did not meet their needs. So they ended up at the Amputee Care Center, in Genk, Belgium, for a second opinion.

At the Amputee Care Center (ACC), we quickly saw that the active, bright, Arthur could do more. After multidisciplinary consultation, it was decided to start with a cosmetic children's prosthesis.

Each arm prosthesis is unique and is completely custom-made. The pediatric prosthesis for Arthur was digitally designed with precision and then 3D printed in our own state-of-the-art 3D printing lab. At Amputee Care Center, we are proud to say that we are a forerunner in prosthetic innovation.

A 3D printed custom-made prosthesis for Arthur

The 3D prosthetics lab at the Amputee Care Center (ACC) in Genk is a leading prosthetics centre where state-of-the-art arm, hand and leg prostheses are made. We are a leader in Europe and welcome prosthesis wearers from Belgium, the Netherlands and from around the world to make unique, specific prostheses for children and adults. At the ACC, we make unique prostheses that are completely tailored to the needs of the prosthetic wearer.

Young Arthur received a new cosmetic arm prosthesis with multiple attachments. He can change these depending on the activity, and he (and his parents) are very happy with that!

Adjustable prosthesis for children

An adjustable prosthesis for children is a basic prosthesis that can be adjusted as the child grows, so it lasts longer and needs to be replaced less often. At Amputee Care Center, we make these prostheses unique and there are many more options!

With a specially designed attachment, a socket with a spoon, Arthur can clamp and manipulate objects. This helps with daily tasks like eating and drinking, as well as with crafts and other fun things to do.

Arthur loves playing sports. For goalkeeping, the prosthetists at Amputee Care Center have therefore designed a special hand. With this prosthetic attachment, Arthur not only becomes a better goalkeeper, but can also hold all kinds of objects and perform two-handed tasks.

Arthur's pediatric prosthesis is functional and flexible, and can be adjusted as he grows and develops. At Amputee Care Center, we listen to the needs and, based on that, customise the ideal children's prosthesis for each child. Of course, a uniquely designed prosthesis for adults is also possible!

Child with prosthesis can count on innovation!

The great innovation of digital design and 3D printing in prosthetics is that it enables custom-made, affordable and quick-to-produce prostheses that can be easily adapted to the child's specific needs.
The arm or hand prosthesis we made for Arthur is more than a tool. The prosthesis creates pride and self-confidence. Arthur does not see his arm as a limitation, but the prosthesis as an enrichment. This allows him to discover new things and face new challenges as a child with a prosthesis.

Prosthesis for children with print

Our goal is to make heroes! The design of the children's prosthesis for Arthur, inspired by Spider-Man, certainly helps in his enthusiasm. Printed prostheses for children are part of our total package and part of our vision to make every prosthesis wearer feel unique and special. The child prosthesis gets a drawing or print on the prosthetic socket that he or she can be proud of.

From cosmetic to myo-electric children's prosthesis

The next step for Arthur is a myo-electric children's prosthesis. Our custom-made myo-electric arm prosthesis is controlled by electrical signals from the muscles in the arm. Electrodes on the muscles pick up these signals and send them to the prosthesis, which converts them into movements. This type of prosthesis provides children and adults with more natural and complex movements, such as opening or closing a hand.

The vision of the paediatric prosthetics team at Amputee Care Centre is to help children feel special and comfortable in their own skin. An arm prosthesis, such as the Hero arm for example, makes children ‘heroes’ by not only providing them with physical functionality but also emotional strength. The prostheses are designed to be attractive and futuristic. Which helps children feel beautiful, strong and unique. It also enables them to perform daily tasks independently, which increases their independence and self-esteem. This makes them feel like a hero in their own lives.

Parents are part of our prosthetics team

We believe it is important to involve parents in the design of a prosthesis for their child because they understand their child's daily needs and preferences best. Their involvement ensures that the prosthesis best suits the child's needs, which helps our prosthetic designers design a unique prosthesis that maximises the child's activities.

A 3D printed cosmetic prosthesis with various plug-in attachments is the first step for Arthur. We at ACC continue to guide him on his path to further improvements with long-term customised care. In consultation with his parents, there are already plans for Arthur to progress to a personalised myo-electric pediatric prosthesis in the future, which the prosthetics team at ACC has a lot of experience with. This will give Arthur even more opportunities in the future to use his arm to its full potential and to feel special and good!

Free second opinion for child with prosthesis

The child's customised prosthesis from the Amputee Care Center provides a huge improvement in Arthur's quality of life. His parents immediately saw positive changes, for example while eating, playing and doing crafts. Things that were previously a big challenge are easier with his new prosthesis. A second opinion interview for child with prosthesis at the Amputee Care Center has therefore been of great value.

Would you also like to schedule an appointment for a free, no-obligation consultation? Together with your child, you are most welcome to join us. Explore the possibilities and see new innovative solutions.

An orientation meeting is important because it helps to understand all available options, including different types of prostheses, the impact on your child's daily life and the costs. This conversation provides an opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns and make an informed decision about the best care for your child.

Are you, like Arthur's parents were, also looking for a (free and no-obligation) second opinion?
