Arm and hand prostheses for sports

Sports prostheses for the arm and hand are specially developed for sports such as cycling, tennis, rowing, weightlifting or swimming. Thanks to interchangeable attachments, such as handles, paddles or swimming flippers, you switch smoothly between different activities with these sports arm prostheses. These prostheses are made of strong and lightweight materials, such as titanium and carbon fibre, for maximum manoeuvrability and durability.

Hand prostheses for cycling and motorcycling

For cycling and motorcycling, we design hand prostheses with customised links for handlebar controls, braking and shifting systems. This ensures maximum safety and control. The components used are ergonomic and shock-absorbing, keeping long rides comfortable.

Leg prostheses for sports

Sports prostheses for the leg are custom developed for your movement profile and chosen sport. Depending on your needs, at ACC we use technologies such as:

  • Spring modules for energy return
  • Torsion modules for rotational stability
  • Shock absorbers for impact reduction
  • Microprocessor-controlled knees for intelligent control

For specific sports:

  • Swimming: Fully water-resistant prostheses, often made of titanium, with flippers or paddles for additional propulsion. Suitable for both recreational and competitive use.
  • Racket sports: Lightweight and flexible materials combined with cushioning technology provide quick directional changes and explosive power.
  • Winter sports: Leg prostheses with reinforced joints and extra grip offer stability on snow and ice. They are resistant to cold temperatures and intense loads.

Blade prostheses for running

Blade prostheses, made of curved carbon, are optimised for running sports. They store the energy of each step and return it explosively, ensuring a resilient and natural running motion. So you benefit from increased speed and reduced stress on joints and muscles.

At Amputee Care Center, we work with leading brands such as:

  • Össur Flex-Run: Ideal for both recreational and professional runners.
  • Össur Cheetah Xtreme: For explosive sprints and peak performance.
  • Ottobock Runner: Suitable for a wide audience, with a perfect balance between energy, stability and adaptability.

Our experts will help you choose the right model, based on your level, weight, technique and race ambitions.

Fine-tuning sports prostheses via gait analysis

In our own state-of-the-art gait lab, we perform gait analyses free of charge, even if your prosthesis was made elsewhere. Thanks to high-speed cameras, pressure sensors and biomechanical analysis, we accurately map your gait pattern, posture and impact forces.

Based on these insights, we fine-tune your sports prosthesis down to the smallest detail. This process can make the difference between participation and the podium or between an injury and a personal record.

Bath, shower and swimming prostheses

Bath, shower and swimming prostheses are designed for use in wet environments. They are made of corrosion-resistant materials such as titanium and often contain drainage holes for extra comfort. Although less suitable for everyday walking, they are perfect for activities in and around water.

Reimbursement in Belgium and the Netherlands

Sports prostheses are not standard reimbursed by the basic health insurance. In Belgium, partial refunds exist via mutualities or funds for people with disabilities. In the Netherlands, it depends on your health insurance; additional coverage or an application on medical grounds may partially cover the costs.

We will gladly assist you in compiling a dossier and help you look for subsidy options via sports federations or funds.

Frequently asked questions about sports prostheses

Why a sports prosthesis instead of a standard prosthesis?

Sports prostheses are specially designed for intensive physical activities. They are lighter, more flexible and powerful than standard prostheses, and often made of high-performance materials such as carbon fibre. Their design allows them to absorb impact better and return energy more efficiently, which is essential for performance in, for example, running, cycling, skiing or swimming.

Standard prostheses focus on daily movement and comfort. Sports prostheses focus on speed, strength, reaction time and safety at higher loads. They give you a technical edge during sports.

Can sports prostheses be used for all sports?

Yes, there are sports prostheses for almost every sport, from athletics and cycling to swimming and winter sports. The important thing is that a sports prosthesis is always tailored to the specific requirements of the sport. Think agility in racket sports, cushioning in football or propulsion in swimming.

At Amputee Care Center, we analyse your movement pattern and sports goals to determine the right construction and functionality. This way, we guarantee maximum performance and comfort.

Are sports prostheses expensive?

The price of a sports prosthesis is usually between €5,000 and €20,000. It depends on the type of sport, the material used, the complexity of the design and the technology used (such as blades, shock absorbers or microprocessors). Read more about sports prosthesis costs here.

At Amputee Care Center, you get a clear cost estimate in advance, including advice on possible reimbursements and subsidy options.

Is a sports prosthesis reimbursed?

In Belgium: Mutualities sometimes provide partial refunds if there is a medical necessity. There are also subsidies for disabled athletes through sports federations or funds.

In the Netherlands: Reimbursement depends on your insurance. In some cases, supplementary insurance meets your needs or there are funds for talented athletes.

We guide you through the application process and provide the correct medical and technical documentation. This is how we help you get the most out of your reimbursement.

Can I use a sports prosthesis immediately after my amputation?

Usually not. In the first months after an amputation, it is important that your stump heals and your body adapts to a standard prosthesis. After that, when you can move comfortably and stably, fitting a sports prosthesis is possible.

Amputee Care Center will guide you through every stage of this process. The earlier we are involved, the better we can prepare you for an active future.

Can a sports prosthesis help with running?

Definitely. Blade prostheses with curved carbon fibre are specifically designed for running. They return energy with every step, making you move more efficiently and tire less quickly.

Whether you want to jog or sprint at top level - we will work with you to find the right model and adjust it exactly to your body and running style.

Do I need training for a sports prosthesis?

Yes, with intensive sports movements, guidance is essential. Amputee Care Center offers specialised training, in collaboration with physiotherapists and sports coaches. You will learn how to use your prosthesis optimally, improve your posture and reduce your risk of injury.

In addition, training helps you build strength, endurance and confidence in your movements.

Are sports prostheses suitable for any type of amputation?

Yes, sports prostheses can be adapted to different amputation levels - both upper and lower leg, as well as arm and hand amputations. The choice and construction of the prosthesis are tailored to your anatomy, sport and goals.

During an intake, we review the technical possibilities together. Everything is tailor-made.

How do I maintain my sports prosthesis?

Good maintenance is essential for safety and performance.

  • Check regularly for wear or damage.
  • Clean the prosthesis with a soft cloth after each use.
  • Avoid sand, dirt or water in the moving parts.
  • Schedule an annual service - it is free with us, even if your prosthesis was made elsewhere.

Our team will check all parts and readjust your prosthesis if necessary. This keeps your material in top shape.
