Dynamic lower leg prosthesis

Dynamic lower leg prosthesis

At Amputee Care Center, we design customised dynamic lower leg prostheses especially for people with active lifestyles. In our in-house laboratory, we create lightweight prostheses that support smooth and natural movement.

A dynamic lower leg prosthesis combines innovative technologies and high-quality materials such as carbon fibre (carbon feet) and electronic ankles. This not only ensures more efficient walking and less fatigue, but also makes the prosthesis suitable for long-term and recreational use. As a result, many of our prosthesis wearers experience a huge improvement in mobility, self-confidence and their overall quality of life.

When fitting an active prosthesis, analysing and fine-tuning your gait is essential. To do this, we use our own advanced biomechanical gait lab. Using this technology, our experts analyse your movements in detail. This allows us to optimally tune the fit, balance and adjustment of the prosthesis to your physique and specific needs.

In our own lab, we combine expertise with innovative techniques such as 3D printing. This allows us not only to test your prosthesis thoroughly, but also to deliver it faster. So you do not have to wait weeks or months before you can get started with your custom-made lower leg prosthesis.

In doubt about your current prosthesis or want to know how your mobility can be improved? You can come to Amputee Care Center for a second opinion or a free gait analysis. During this analysis, our specialists will look at how you move and give you non-binding advice on possible improvements or solutions to suit your lifestyle.

Transfer prosthesis lower leg

A transfer prosthesis is a prosthesis used almost immediately after the stump has healed following an amputation. This type of prosthesis is also used for less mobile and/or wheelchair-bound prosthesis users.

This group of users usually have slightly less conscious control over their prosthesis, so, especially initially, we make sure we can provide a lot of stability and safety with the prosthesis. Transfer prostheses are therefore made with particular attention to safety and comfort in and around the home. Consider the addition of shock-absorbing prosthetic feet and rotational adapters, for example. Thanks to the holistic total care and guidance at our prosthesis centre in Genk, we see that many amputees quickly make great progress with a transfer prosthesis.

At Amputee Care Center, we ensure that the transfer prosthesis fits your stump and your personal needs perfectly. Where necessary, the prosthesis is adjusted to be as comfortable as possible. In addition, we teach you how to use and maintain the prosthesis correctly. This is often an underexposed, but very important, part for successful rehabilitation.

Wondering if a transfer prosthesis is right for you? Then contact us for a no-obligation free consultation over a cup of coffee.

Lower leg prostheses innovation

At Amputee Care Center, innovation is key. By constantly developing ourselves and our prosthetic technologies, we are able to offer our amputees ever more advanced and better solutions. Recent innovations include:

  • 3D-printed prostheses: this technology allows us to create highly accurate customised prostheses. Moreover, 3D-printed prostheses are lighter and stronger than traditional prostheses. At ACC, we have a large orthopaedic workshop and a laboratory with 3D printers, allowing us to create different types of solutions with short waiting times. This means you will be helped quickly and efficiently with a prosthesis that fits you perfectly.
  • Bionic prostheses: These prostheses are equipped with sensor technology and microprocessors that can adapt to the environment and your movements as a prosthetic wearer.
  • New materials: Materials we use to make prostheses are becoming lighter and more durable. This makes the prostheses last longer but are also more comfortable to use.
  • Direct Fitting: One of the most groundbreaking innovations we offer is the concept of ‘direct fitting’. This technology allows us to make and fit prostheses on the same day. This allows us to deliver a functional, comfortable prosthesis immediately upon fitting.

The Amputee Care Center team works closely with amputees and their attendants - and in the case of children's prostheses, with the parents - to find the best solution for each unique situation. Whether it is a prosthesis designed for daily use, sports, or other specific activities, our team is ready to deliver a perfectly tailored solution.

By combining innovation with a personalised approach, we at Amputee Care Center make a difference. Together, we make sure you get the most out of your prosthesis and of life.

How long does it take to get a lower leg prosthesis?

In the past, making a lower leg prosthesis could take several weeks to months. However, because we work with advanced technologies and 3D printing at Amputee Care Center, many types of prostheses can be made in as little as one day! Generally speaking, you should count on several weeks. We do our best to keep our waiting lists as short as possible, so you get your turn quickly and don't have to wait months for your new prosthesis.

Can I walk with a lower leg prosthesis?

Yes, that is the goal! The right lower leg prosthesis and rehabilitation support ensures that even older people, after amputation, can walk again and even climb stairs or cycle. At Amputee Care Center, you can get a unique total care concept and customised prosthetic care, where our goal is always to improve your quality of life based on your personal wishes and goals.

Does a lower leg prosthesis hurt?

In principle, no, but in the initial phase there may be some discomfort or pain because the prosthesis may need some adjustment and it also puts pressure on the stump. Always let us know any pain complaints as soon as possible so that we can work together to find a solution?

Which liners are best for lower leg prosthesis use?

Common options available at Amputee Care Centre include silicone liners (for stability and skin protection), gel liners (for comfort and pressure distribution) and polyurethane liners (for excellent fit and pressure distribution in sensitive stump areas). The choice depends on skin type, activity level and personal preference. You can also have liners custom-made, which contributes to user comfort.

How do I maintain my lower leg prosthesis?

Annual maintenance and fine-tuning of your prosthesis is important for maintaining comfort, but also for its longevity. Your prosthesis should be cleaned regularly, as well as checked annually for wear and tear. The prosthetist at ACC will advise you on how to properly maintain your prosthesis. In addition, you can visit Amputee Care Center for free annual maintenance and check-up of your prosthesis. Get your prosthesis checked on time! Annual maintenance safeguards your warranty on certain prosthetic parts.

Is a lower leg prosthesis reimbursed by mutual insurance in Belgium?

Yes. In Belgium, reimbursement of a lower leg prosthesis is regulated by the health insurance scheme (RIZIV). For medically necessary prostheses, you can expect full reimbursement. However, a co-payment may apply for specific prostheses. The Amputee Care Center is an officially recognised supplier of all mutualities and insurers in Belgium and the Netherlands. The ACC team will help you apply for reimbursement, relieving you of the administrative hassle.

Is a lower leg prosthesis covered by health insurance in the Netherlands?

Yes. In the Netherlands, a lower leg prosthesis is covered by the basic health insurance. The basic lower leg prosthesis is almost always reimbursed, but an extra contribution may be needed if you want extra features. A co-payment is usually required for sports prostheses or bionic prostheses, for example. At Amputee Care Center, we help you apply for reimbursements and can advise you on this. We are official partners of all Dutch health insurers and can take the entire process off your hands.

How is a lower leg prosthesis made?

A lower leg prosthesis is custom-made at the Amputee Care Center (ACC) in seven steps: consultation, sizing (plaster cast/3D scan), socket design, fabrication with lightweight materials, trial fitting and fitting, finishing and training. The process focuses on comfort, functionality and a perfect fit, tailored to the amputee's needs and goals.

Which lower leg amputation level gives the best result?

The most appropriate amputation level for a lower leg prosthesis is usually the transtibial amputation. This leaves the knee joint intact, allowing for better mobility, stability and functionality. This level of amputation provides an optimal balance between energy consumption and prosthetic control, making it easier for you to walk and carry out daily activities.

How is an Ankle Ex-Articulation lower leg prosthesis made?

The prosthesis makers at Amputee Care Center specialise in different types of lower leg prostheses. Your amputation level plays an important role. An ankle ex-articulation, where the foot is completely removed but the tibia remains intact, offers good stability and support. This is due to the preserved anatomy of the lower leg, but the prosthesis may be slightly bulkier due to the length of the stump.

What is a PTB prosthesis?

A PTB prosthesis (Patella Tendon Bearing prosthesis) is a type of lower leg prosthesis specially designed to distribute the weight of the prosthetic wearer in a stable manner. Most of the load is borne by the Patella Tendon or patellar tendon (knee tendon), relieving sensitive areas of your stump. The PTB lower leg prosthesis is especially suitable for active people with a well-flowing stump.

What is a trans-tibial (TT) amputation?

A transtibial amputation, also known as a lower leg amputation, is a surgical procedure in which the lower leg is removed, usually 10 to 15 centimetres below the knee. The advantage of this amputation is that the knee joint is preserved, which facilitates walking with a prosthesis. The rehabilitation process can be very smooth but also intensive, depending on the individual's condition and any additional health problems.

What is a trans-tibial (TT) prosthesis?

A trans-tibial prosthesis is an artificial leg that replaces the lower leg, applied after amputation (through the tibia) below the knee. A TT prosthesis consists of a socket placed over the remaining stump, a connecting connector and a prosthetic foot. The design and components of a modular TT prosthesis are tailored to the user's individual needs and activity level, with the aim of providing the most natural mobility and functionality possible. A well-fitting transtibial prosthesis can give users a gait pattern that is barely distinguishable from a natural gait.
