Open Bionics

Open Bionics at Amputee Care Center

Open Bionics develops state-of-the-art hand and arm prostheses for children and adults with an amputation or a congenital difference in the hand or arm. The prostheses are digitally designed, 3D-printed, and customized to your body, usage, and preferences.

At Amputee Care Center, we guide you through the entire process—from the initial consultation and intake to fitting, training, follow-up, and assistance with administrative matters or reimbursement.

We don’t just focus on the prosthesis itself; we focus primarily on your situation.

What do you want to be able to do again? What challenges are you currently facing? Which activities are important to you? And what does a prosthesis need to do for you to actually want to wear it?

For Children and Adults

Open Bionics often really captures children’s imagination. We understand that well. A prosthesis doesn’t have to be something you hide. It can also be something that reflects your personality and that you can wear with confidence.

For children, that can mean a lot, at school, while playing, when interacting with others, and in how they view their own bodies.

But Open Bionics is certainly not just for children. Adults, too, are increasingly looking for a prosthesis that is technically advanced, comfortable to wear, and fits their lifestyle, whether for work, daily activities, sports, hobbies, or simply to experience greater independence.

That’s why we always start with the same question:

What should this prosthesis enable you to do?

Hero ARM

The Hero ARM is a bionic arm prosthesis for children and adults with an amputation below the elbow. The prosthesis is custom-made and can be customized with different covers.
This makes the Hero ARM not only functional but also personalized. This combination can be especially important for children: a prosthesis that helps them in their daily lives and also matches what they find beautiful, cool, or fun.

Hero PRO

Hero PRO was developed for those looking for a powerful, lightweight, and modern bionic hand prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed for everyday use, with various gripping functions and options to customize its operation to the user.
During the initial consultation, we’ll work with you to determine whether Hero PRO is a good fit for your amputation level, muscle control, activities, and expectations.

Hero RGD

Hero RGD is designed for people who need greater durability in their daily lives. This includes work, outdoor activities, or situations where a prosthesis needs to withstand greater stress.
Not every prosthesis is suitable for every activity. That’s why we carefully assess in advance what you plan to do with it and which solution will give you the most confidence.

Hero FLEX

Hero FLEX is a modular system that allows you to switch between different applications. This makes it ideal for people who want to use their prosthesis in a variety of ways, such as for sports, work, water activities, or hobbies.
The socket is custom-made and designed with a focus on comfort, ventilation, and freedom of movement.

Hero GAUNTLET

Hero GAUNTLET was developed for people with a partial hand deficiency. This solution supports grasping and holding without always requiring a full bionic hand prosthesis.
In cases of partial hand deficiency, customization is especially important. Small differences in fit, pressure distribution, and movement can have a significant impact on daily use.

More Than Just Technology

A bionic prosthesis is capable of a great deal from a technical standpoint. But ultimately, what matters is what you can do with it in your daily life.

That’s why we take the time to fully understand your situation. We assess your residual limb, muscle control, skin, strength, range of motion, and daily activities. We also discuss what you expect from the prosthesis and what is realistically achievable.

We’re honest about this. Sometimes a bionic prosthesis is an excellent choice. Sometimes another solution is more practical. And sometimes a combination of different prostheses or accessories makes the most sense.

With us, you won’t receive one-size-fits-all advice, but a personalized plan tailored to your needs.

What Does the Process Involve?

  1. Initial Consultation
We start with a conversation. Who is the prosthesis intended for? What is the current situation? What experience do you already have with prostheses? And what would you like to be able to do?
For children, we also involve the parents or caregivers. We listen to practical questions, as well as any doubts, expectations, and uncertainties.
  2. Assessment and Consultation
Next, we explore what’s technically possible. We evaluate factors such as the level of amputation, the shape of the stump, muscle activity, movement control, and daily use.
Based on this, we discuss which Open Bionics prosthesis is the best fit.
  3. Measurement and Design
Once the choice has been made, the prosthesis is custom-designed. We focus on fit, comfort, function, and appearance.
Personal preferences, such as color or cover, are also taken into account.
  4. Fitting and Training
You have to learn how to use a prosthesis. That’s why we guide you through the fitting, adjustment, and initial training.
You’ll learn how the prosthesis responds, how to use different gripping functions, and how to use them safely in everyday situations.
  5. Follow-up
We remain involved after delivery. Follow-up is especially important for children, as growth and changing usage patterns affect the fit. Adjustments may also be necessary for adults if you start using the prosthesis more intensively.

A Prosthesis You Can Be Proud of

Many traditional prostheses are designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. That can be nice, but it doesn’t suit everyone.

Open Bionics takes a different approach. A prosthesis can be both functional and personal. You can choose a subtle look, but you can also opt for a design that truly reflects who you are.

For some users, that makes a big difference—not just in how the prosthesis looks, but especially in how comfortable it is to wear.

With more confidence. With less explaining. And sometimes even with pride.

Reimbursement and Administration

People with an arm amputation from Belgium and the Netherlands usually receive (full) reimbursement for the Hero Arm from Open Bionics. In Belgium, this myoelectric arm prosthesis is often fully reimbursed for children through health insurance; for adults, it is often (nearly) fully reimbursed. In the Netherlands, the Hero Arm is covered by basic health insurance, but you usually need prior authorization. At our Benelux Center, we’ll help you with the application for approval or authorization.

Are you unsure whether Open Bionics is right for you?

If so, you’re welcome to schedule an initial consultation.

Perhaps you’re already wearing a prosthesis but are curious to see if there are more options available. Maybe you’re looking for a solution for your child that better suits their needs at school, during play, or for building self-confidence. Or perhaps you’re just at the very beginning of your journey.

Together, we’ll explore what’s possible, what makes sense, and what the next logical step is.

Frequently Asked Questions About Open Bionics

Is Open Bionics suitable for children?

Is Open Bionics also suitable for adults?

Yes. Adults may also be eligible for an Open Bionics prosthesis. We primarily consider your daily activities, work, hobbies, experience with prostheses, and what you hope to achieve with the prosthesis.

Yes. A bionic prosthesis requires practice. You’ll learn how your muscles control the prosthesis, how to use different gripping functions, and how to use the prosthesis in everyday situations.

Is an Open Bionics prosthesis covered by insurance?

That depends on your personal situation, the type of prosthesis, and the policies of the relevant agencies. We’ll help you explore your options and handle the necessary paperwork.
