Back on the course with a golf prosthesis

Back on the course with a golf prosthesis

At the Amputee Care Centre (ACC) in Belgium, both amateurs and top athletes with a leg or arm prosthesis can have a special prosthesis fitted for golf, specially designed for optimal swing, grip and stability. ACC is a specialised centre that manufactures sports prostheses using advanced materials and innovative techniques that maximise both comfort and performance. Whether you play recreationally or competitively, a customised golf prosthesis from ACC will help you execute every stroke more efficiently and with greater control.

Prosthesis for golf after amputation

Golf requires concentration, control and feel: three things that need to be rebalanced after an amputation. Many people think that golf is no longer possible after an amputation, but fortunately that is not true. With the right golf prosthesis and guidance, you can get back on the course, whether you play recreationally or have competitive ambitions.

At Amputee Care Centre (ACC), we help golfers with this. We develop and fit golf prostheses that provide stability, flexibility and comfort with every swing.

The possibilities for golfers

Golf is a unique sport: it requires not only strength, but above all control over balance and rotation. After an amputation, that movement pattern changes. However, with a few adjustments, most golfers can continue to enjoy their hobby or sport.

The possibilities depend on the type of amputation (arm, lower leg or upper leg), your experience, your current golf level and your personal goals (recreational or competitive level). At ACC, we always look at the whole person, not just the prosthesis.

The advantages of a golf prosthesis

A well-designed golf prosthesis makes the difference between “being able to participate” and “enjoying playing again”. The main advantages are:

  • Better balance during the swing and follow-through
  • More control over the direction and speed of the shot
  • Less fatigue during a round of 9 or 18 holes
  • More confidence in your posture and movement
  • And perhaps most importantly: enjoying the game again

Golf prostheses for leg amputations

For golfers with a leg amputation, the emphasis is on stability and rotation control. During a swing, the body must rotate smoothly without the prosthesis shifting or losing balance.

A golf prosthesis for the leg therefore often has:

  • A reinforced, torsion-friendly socket that rotates during the swing.
  • A flexible foot module that provides grip and resilience on uneven surfaces.
  • A lightweight construction to make prolonged standing and walking on the course comfortable.

Some golfers opt for a separate “golf prosthesis” that they only use when playing, so that they have maximum freedom of movement without wearing out their everyday prosthesis.

Golf prostheses for arm amputations

For golfers with an arm amputation, grip and controlled power are key. The prosthesis must enable them to hold the club firmly, but also to let go when necessary, without unnatural tension.

A good golf hand prosthesis often has:

  • A quick-release coupling that allows you to easily attach the club
  • A rotating wrist joint for a natural swing
  • An ergonomic fit that absorbs shocks on impact

At ACC, we work with lightweight, durable materials and sometimes even 3D-printed couplings, fully tailored to the club position and your height.

What is the process at Amputee Care Centre?

Every golf prosthesis is fully customised. At ACC, the process is step by step:

1. Introduction and analysis

We start with a conversation about your wishes and goals: do you play weekly or occasionally, and what are you currently struggling with? We then examine your current prosthesis, posture and swing movement.

2. Customised design

Our prosthetists design a golf prosthesis that suits your level and preferences. This could be a leg prosthesis with a torsion module or a hand coupling with adjustable grip. We take weight, balance and durability into account.

3. Test phase on the practice course

You can try out the prosthesis, for example on the driving range or putting green. This allows us to experience together how it moves during rotation, bending and pressure.

4. Adjustment and fine-tuning

Golf is all about feel. That's why we fine-tune small details: the angle of the socket, resistance in the coupling or flexibility of the foot. Everything to help you regain your natural swing.

5. Guidance and aftercare

We continue to monitor you after delivery. We schedule periodic check-ups, especially if you play more often or undergo physical changes. This ensures that your golf prosthesis continues to perform optimally, even in the long term.

Tips for golfers with prostheses

  1. Start with short sessions. Give your body time to get used to the rotation and pressure.
  2. Practise your balance. Stand still with your eyes closed and feel how your weight is distributed over both legs or shoulders.
  3. Use a wider stance when teeing off. This increases stability.
  4. Work with a golf coach. Many PGA coaches have experience with adapted golfers.
  5. Maintain your prosthesis well. Sand, moisture and mud can put strain on the components. Therefore, rinse and dry the components after each session.

Sport as part of rehabilitation

Golf is more than just a sport; it is also a good form of rehabilitation. It improves your balance, coordination, muscle strength and concentration. It also helps you maintain social contacts and boosts your self-confidence.

At ACC, we often see people rediscover their freedom of movement and joie de vivre through golf. That makes designing a golf prosthesis extra special: it's not just about technology, but about bringing back enjoyment.

How much does a golf prosthesis cost?

The cost depends on the type of prosthesis, the materials used and whether additional adjustments to the socket, foot or hand are required. We always provide a personalised price estimate during an introductory meeting. Sometimes (partial) reimbursement through your health insurance fund or health insurance is possible, especially if the same prosthesis is also used for therapy or daily mobility.

Working together on your swing

Whether you are just starting out or have been playing for years, golfing with a prosthesis requires some adjustment, but the enjoyment remains the same. At Amputee Care Centre, we combine technical precision with personal guidance. We listen, measure, test and fine-tune until everything is just right, so that you can return to the course with confidence.

Would you like to know what's possible for you? Feel free to contact us for a no-obligation consultation or a test appointment. Together, we'll make sure that not only does your swing return, but it feels better than ever.
