What does a sports prosthesis cost?

beenprothesen specialist

A sports prosthesis is designed to enable prosthesis wearers with an amputation to play and perform sports at a recreational or high level. These prostheses are optimised for different sports activities, ranging from running and sprinting to cycling, golf, tennis, water skiing, snowboarding or skiing. Here is an overview of everything you need to know about the cost sports prosthesis.

Sports with a prosthesis: unique concept

Every sport requires different movements and loads on the body. Sports with a prosthesis for running, for example, is designed to absorb shock and provide energy. A cycling prosthesis, on the other hand, is all about stability and flexibility. At the Amputee Care Center (ACC for short), we use innovative technologies and materials, such as titanium and 3D printing, to ensure optimal fit and functionality. Each sports prosthesis is unique and is always custom-made.

Total care for amputees

Of course, despite an amputation or congenital defect, you would like to maintain or develop an active lifestyle. Choosing a good and affordable sports prosthesis is an important step. Especially since the prosthesis wearer often bears the costs himself.

At the Amputee Care Center (ACC by Spronken), we understand that a leg prosthesis or arm prosthesis can have a big impact both physically and mentally. You can therefore come to us not only for a custom-made daily prosthesis, but also for a specialised sports prosthesis. We guide you with extensive (free) advice. It is part of our total care package for amputees.

Reimbursement - Reimbursement sports prosthesis in Belgium and the Netherlands

A sports prosthesis is quite expensive, especially if you have to pay for everything (or part of it) yourself. Therefore, a high-performing sports prosthesis is unfortunately not for everyone. The sums involved are considerable, but sometimes costs are fortunately partially reimbursed through the Belgian mutual health insurance, Dutch health insurance or other organisation. However, it is important to note here that most sports prostheses are not reimbursed by default. Fortunately, initiatives such as Uniek Sporten exist in the Netherlands. In Belgium, there are also possibilities for compensation, depending on your situation.

  • In Belgium, you will usually only get one prosthesis from the health insurance and sports prostheses are not reimbursed by default, but there are possibilities through supplementary insurances, sports funds or in the case of rehabilitation.
  • In the Netherlands, basic insurance is limited to functional prostheses, and for sports prostheses, in some cases there is supplementary insurance, UWV reimbursement, or support from funds can be obtained.

It is always wise to contact us or your health insurer to find out exactly what your personal options are for reimbursement.

The Amputee Care Center (by Spronken) is an approved supplier of prostheses and orthoses in the Netherlands and Belgium. Are you insured in the Netherlands or Belgium? Get in touch with us. We will be happy to help you explore reimbursement or compensation options.

Cost of running prosthesis

A running prosthesis has a unique design that is distinctly different from a standard prosthesis. The main component of a sports prosthesis for running is the C-shaped blade spring, usually made of carbon fibre. The blade resembles an inverted J or arch. This spring-like shape is designed to store and release energy with each run. This gives the athlete a springy, bouncy feeling while running.

A running prosthesis or a prosthesis for jogging is specially designed to absorb impact and release energy. For a specialised running prosthesis, the price of the entry-level model at Amputee Care Center is €9,400 and can go up to €15,000 or more. This depends on the type of prosthesis (lower leg or upper leg) and the strength of the leaf spring.

Leg prosthesis costs racquet sports, football, indoor sports

For sports that require rapid directional changes and stability, such as tennis, football and indoor football, lower leg prostheses and upper leg prostheses are fitted with a performance prosthetic base that absorbs rotational forces and absorbs impact. The cost of this type of prosthesis at the Amputee Care Center is:

With reimbursement from Belgian health insurance:

  • Entry-level model: €872 including VAT.
  • Top model: €3,773 including VAT

Without reimbursement

  • Entry-level model: €9,086 including VAT.
  • Top model: €11,489 including VAT

So with this type of prosthesis, you use your daily prosthesis to play sports. You only pay for the more expensive components yourself, such as a special prosthetic foot.

Bath prosthesis costs

A bath prosthesis is specially designed to be worn during showering or other (regular) activities in water. These prostheses are made of water-resistant materials and have a non-slip design to provide stability and safety on wet surfaces. They are important because they give people with amputations more independence in daily water-related activities without damaging their regular prosthesis.

The cost of a bathing prosthesis varies, but they are generally cheaper than sports prostheses. Prices start around €2000 depending on the type, components and adjustments you need.

Surfing, rowing, kayaking with a prosthesis

A special sports prosthesis for water sports is designed at the Amputee Care Center to function well in wet, salty and sometimes rough conditions. They also often have an adaptable, lightweight design for optimal performance and freedom of movement during activities such as swimming, surfing or kayaking.

For water sports, there is a specially designed prosthesis with water-resistant base and titanium stainless parts. The average price at Amputee Care Center for a water sports prosthesis is €6,852 including VAT.

The price for a water ski prosthesis is usually between €5,000 and €10,000, depending on the technology required and customised adjustments.

Skiing or snowboarding with a leg prosthesis

Ski prosthesis cost

Upper leg prostheses are fitted with a special prosthetic knee and have robust, durable materials to cope with the high loads during skiing. Ski prosthesis costs can range between €8,000 and €15,000, depending on specifications and adjustments.
Thanks to modern technology in new prosthetic feet, skiers with an amputation can perform and safely participate in winter sports with improved control and performance on the slopes.

Snowboard prosthesis costs

Snowboard prostheses are specifically designed to support the balance and turning movements required for snowboarding. They usually have flexible components for lateral movement and shock absorption, allowing the snowboarder to glide smoothly across the snow. Snowboard prosthesis costs at Amputee Care Center range from €6,000 to €12,000, depending on the material used and adjustments.

Bicycle prosthesis costs

If you are interested in a bicycle prosthesis, it is a good idea to contact the Amputee Care Center (ACC) to get an exact quote that suits your personal situation and needs.

Options for bicycle prostheses for leg and arm amputations are varied and highly dependent on personal needs. Tailor-made prostheses and bicycle adaptations allow people with amputations to enjoy cycling while maintaining safety, stability and comfort. Consultation with our specialised prosthetists at the Amputee Care Center and a bicycle fitting specialist is essential for making the right solution.

Bicycle prostheses have a deeper cut-out socket at the hollow of the knee for extra knee flexion. These often also feature direct attachment for pedals. The average bicycle prosthesis price at the ACC is €5,279 including VAT, but can range between €2,000 and €15,000. Attachments for arm prostheses and hand orthoses are often custom printed, making the prosthesis lighter and personalised for your specific needs.

Upper leg sports prosthesis prices

Upper leg prostheses are priced similarly to lower leg prostheses, but there is the added cost of the prosthetic knee. The cost of a prosthetic knee can range from €3,000 to more than €30,000, depending on the type, technology and adjustments required. Simple mechanical knees are cheaper, while advanced models with hydraulic or microprocessor-controlled systems are significantly more expensive.

Request a sports prosthesis price quote

You can request a sports prosthesis price quote from a specialised orthopaedic prosthesis centre. Preferably, choose a prosthetic centre that is not brand-specific. The Amputee Care Center (ACC for short) in Genk, Belgium is such a specialised, independent prosthetic centre and works with various manufacturers of prosthetic components worldwide.

An independent prosthetic centre offers more freedom of choice by not being tied to specific brands and products, providing a wider range of options. This allows them to select prostheses that better suit your individual needs and preferences. The objective advice they give is often more reliable as they do not have to promote brand preferences. This makes the service customer-centric and focused on finding the best solution for the user.
