How do you shower with a prosthesis?

How do you shower with a prosthesis?

Showering is something we all do, often without thinking about it. But after an amputation, it is no longer a matter of course. How do you stay safe in a slippery bathroom, around the pool or on the beach? Can your leg prosthesis or arm prosthesis get wet? And what special prostheses are available for showering? Is a water-resistant prosthesis a good thing to have?

The short answer is yes. With a shower prosthesis or a waterproof prosthesis, you can not only shower comfortably and safely, but you can also go to the pool or the beach without worrying about your balance or damaging parts. At Amputee Care Centre (ACC), we are happy to help you find the right prosthetic solution.

Why a shower prosthesis?

After an amputation, it is important that you can resume your daily rituals. Showering is often part of this, but it can present practical challenges:

  • A wet floor makes it difficult to remain stable.
  • Many standard prostheses are not water-resistant.
  • The stump requires special care and must be able to dry properly.

A shower prosthesis is specially designed to deal with these kinds of situations, allowing you to shower independently again.

What is a shower prosthesis?

A shower prosthesis is a prosthesis that is moisture and corrosion resistant. The materials are resistant to water, steam and soap, and the connections are extra well sealed. This prevents moisture from penetrating parts such as valves or seals.

Depending on the type of amputation, this may involve:

  • A leg prosthesis with a waterproof socket and non-slip foot.
  • An arm prosthesis with water-resistant components for better care of the stump.

Some people use their shower prosthesis exclusively in the bathroom; others would like a prosthesis for use in water activities such as swimming or physiotherapy in the pool. At ACC, we discuss together what suits you best, because every situation is different.

The advantages of a shower prosthesis

A shower prosthesis offers more than just comfort. It also contributes to safety, independence and skin health.

  • Safety: less risk of slipping thanks to a stable grip and non-slip sole.
  • Hygiene: you can better care for and wash the stump without damaging the prosthesis.
  • Independence: you are less dependent on help when showering.
  • Durability: you protect your daily prosthesis from moisture, which prevents wear and tear.

In short: a shower prosthesis helps you regain confidence in your daily routine.

What is the process at Amputee Care Center?

The orthopaedic technologists – prosthetists at the Amputee Care Center (BeNeLux headquarters in Genk, Belgium) explain: At the Amputee Care Center (also known as ACC), we ensure that your prosthetic solution precisely meets your needs. Every prosthesis wearer is different, has different wishes and needs, and a different budget. Our support usually proceeds as follows, step by step:

1. Introduction and analysis

We start with a personal consultation. What is your lifestyle like? Do you want a prosthesis for use in the bathroom, or do you also want to take it to the swimming pool or beach? Do you stand or sit while showering? How mobile are you at the moment? We also take a look at your current prosthesis and explore the various options together.

2. Choosing a solution

Sometimes an existing prosthesis can be adapted with waterproof components. In other cases, we make a separate shower prosthesis or swimming pool prosthesis, specially designed for wet use. We advise on materials, couplings and any additional aids such as a shower chair, shower seats or grab rails.

3. Measurement and design

Every leg prosthesis and arm prosthesis is fully customised at the Amputee Care Centre. We ensure that the socket fits properly, that no water penetrates and that the construction remains light and stable. We use lightweight, strong materials and offer a global range of prosthetic components, so that every prosthesis wearer gets the right solution.

4. Testing and adjustment

You try out the prosthesis in a safe environment. We pay attention to stability, comfort and ease of use. We adjust small details based on your feedback.

5. Aftercare and maintenance

Water-resistant prostheses require regular maintenance. We teach you how to best clean and dry the prosthesis and schedule check-ups to keep everything in top condition.

Showering with a prosthetic leg

For people who have recently had a leg amputation, showering is often the biggest challenge. A slippery floor and limited balance can make it difficult to stand safely. A shower prosthesis can help with this.

Features of a leg shower prosthesis:

  • Lightweight, waterproof construction: resistant to moisture and soap.
  • Non-slip foot: prevents slipping on wet tiles.
  • Easy connection: quick to attach or detach.
  • Easy to keep clean: less chance of bacteria formation or odour.

In some cases, it may be more comfortable to shower while seated. A simple, shorter shower prosthesis or a support solution can also offer a solution here. At ACC, we look at what suits your comfort and safety.

Showering with an arm prosthesis

When an arm has been amputated, the emphasis is on caring for and protecting the stump. Water and soap can soften the skin, increasing the risk of irritation.

An arm shower prosthesis allows you to wash properly without getting the rest of the prosthesis wet. We often use lightweight, waterproof materials and a simple coupling for this, so that you can easily put on and take off the prosthesis yourself.

Some people opt for a special shower aid, such as an extended arm or handle, to wash hard-to-reach areas. We also discuss these solutions at ACC.

Practical tips for safe showering

  • Use a non-slip mat or shower seat.
  • Ensure that the bathroom is well lit and accessible.
  • Dry the prosthesis and stump thoroughly after showering.
  • Regularly check the skin for irritation or redness.
  • Rinse the prosthesis with clean water to remove soap residue.
  • Allow the prosthesis to dry completely before storing it.

These simple steps will help to keep showering safe and enjoyable.

How much does a shower prosthesis cost?

The price of a shower prosthesis depends on the type, materials and customisation. We always provide a personalised price estimate during an introductory meeting. Sometimes (partial) reimbursement is possible through health insurance or mutual insurance, especially if the prosthesis is essential for independent care. The ACC prosthesis administration team is happy to help prosthesis wearers from Belgium and the United Kingdom apply for this reimbursement.

Shower prosthesis vs. water-resistant prosthesis

Shower prosthesis
  • Designed for safe showering.
  • Non-slip base, simple construction.
  • Not intended for prolonged swimming use.
Water-resistant prosthesis
  • Suitable for swimming, beach, chlorinated and salt water (depending on model).
  • More durable, with waterproof bearings and corrosion-resistant materials.

Shower and water-resistant arm prostheses: what is possible?

Electronic arm prostheses and hands are usually not completely waterproof and must be well protected against moisture and water.

Possible options:

  • Splash-proof covers.
  • Simple mechanical water hand for showering, turning the shower tap on and off, or swimming.
  • A spare arm prosthesis for wet activities can be a very useful aid to make your life more efficient and enjoyable.

Consult with your prosthetist at the Amputee Care Centre to find out which options are best suited to your activities.
