I have had or am about to have a lower leg amputation. What now?

I have had or am about to have a lower leg amputation. What now?

A lower leg amputation, also known as a transtibial amputation, raises many questions. What happens next? Which prosthesis is right for me? Where can I go for the best care?

At Amputee Care Centre by Spronken, we are happy to help you regain your mobility, stability and independence. Are you facing a transtibial amputation, or have you had a leg prosthesis for many years? There are modern solutions that can make your daily life much easier.

What is a transtibial amputation?

In Belgium, approximately 2,300 people undergo a transtibial amputation every year. That is an average of about six people per day in Belgium. This is an amputation in which the lower leg is removed, but the knee is retained. This is important because retaining the knee provides greater stability. It also allows you to maintain a more natural gait.

Compared to other leg amputations, people with a transtibial amputation can often rehabilitate relatively quickly and resume an active daily life. Of course, this requires a well-fitting initial lower leg prosthesis.

Contact before the amputation is crucial

Many people think that making an appointment for a lower leg prosthesis is only necessary after the amputation surgery. That is a missed opportunity. By contacting us before the surgery, we at Amputee Care Centre can fully prepare you for what to expect. We will draw up a plan for the prosthesis immediately after the amputation and discuss the compression therapy that will reduce swelling and give your stump a nice shape, the stump stockings, liners and the latest socket technology. We can also offer you psychological support if necessary.

Early preparation means that you will be mobile sooner and that the transition to wearing a prosthesis will be smoother.

Immediately after transtibial amputation

By making a plan in advance, we can ensure that you receive a suitable lower leg prosthesis immediately after the operation. We do this with flexible liners that offer comfort and stability in the first few weeks. As soon as you have been medically approved, we will also start rehabilitation training to help you stand and walk. Once the stump has healed, we will switch to a first temporary prosthesis.

For children, active adults and athletes, we can discuss in advance which prosthetic feet and sockets will best suit future activities. We can then immediately tell you about the options available.

Latest generation prostheses

Thanks to modern technologies such as 3D scanning technology, we can design the socket of your lower leg prosthesis to fit you perfectly. This ensures a direct fit, better pressure distribution and less skin irritation.

At Amputee Care Centre, we also have the latest generation of prosthetic feet. These can significantly improve your stability and mobility. Examples include:

  • Dynamic carbon feet for energy recovery when walking.
  • Multi-axial feet that simulate natural movements of the ankle and foot.
  • Sports feet for running, cycling or swimming.

A prosthesis is not a standard aid, but is always tailored to your anatomy and your lifestyle. We also customise all prostheses in our own prosthesis centre.

Optimal stump socks and liners

The right stump sock or liner for your prosthesis is crucial for optimal comfort. It also helps to keep your skin healthy. A modern liner or stump sock helps you with:

  • Pressure distribution and cushioning: prevents pressure points and skin irritation.
  • Moisture regulation: keeps the skin dry and healthy.
  • Compatibility with digital prosthetic sockets
  • Personalisation: there are different thicknesses and materials for active users or people with sensitive skin.

At Amputee Care Centre, we help you choose the right socket liner or liner so that you can get the most out of your lower leg prosthesis.

Second opinion at Amputee Care Centre Belgium

Sometimes you already have a prosthesis or have been referred to a prosthetist orthopaedic supplier, but you are not entirely satisfied or would like more certainty about the fit and the prosthesis itself. At Amputee Care Centre, you can get a second opinion free of charge and without obligation. Even if you are from the Netherlands or another country.

We check the existing prosthetic sockets and advise you on the latest generation of lower leg prostheses that may give you more mobility and stability. We see that prostheses can often be improved thanks to modern techniques and our comprehensive care, especially if you have been using a prosthesis for years.
