A transfemoral amputation involves removing part of the upper leg (through the thigh bone or femur). The amputation level is usually 1/3 above the knee. Because the knee is not preserved, the prosthesis must take over both the knee and partial thigh and lower leg functions. This makes a good fit for your prosthesis and prosthesis guidance crucial. However, with a modern thigh prosthesis, you can lead a very active daily life, including work, sports and hobbies.
Many people only start thinking about a prosthesis once the operation is over. However, contacting a prosthesis specialist at an early stage can make a huge difference. Even before the amputation, we can draw up a plan for the prosthesis options, including the socket, liner and stump stockings. Our holistic total care also includes psychological counselling and applying for the correct reimbursements.
Early preparation ensures that you are mobile more quickly immediately after the operation and that the transition to a final prosthesis is smoother.

After the operation, it is important to start rehabilitation and prosthesis training as soon as possible. In the first few weeks, we often use flexible liners that provide comfort and stability. This allows you to practise standing and walking safely. Once the stump has healed sufficiently, we slowly transition to a first temporary prosthesis.
For active adults, athletes and children, we can also discuss in advance which socket, prosthetic knee and prosthetic foot are best suited to future activities. This ensures that the prosthesis functions optimally right from the start.
Thanks to modern technologies, we at Amputee Care Centre can tailor thigh prostheses perfectly. Digital scanning and sensor technology enable us to achieve a highly accurate socket and prosthesis fit, minimising pressure points and skin irritation and ensuring optimal prosthesis response.
Innovations in prosthetic sockets for thigh prostheses focus on better fit, comfort and functionality. 3D printing technology, such as the Direct Socket system, enables fast, accurate socket production. Subischial sockets offer greater freedom of movement by applying pressure to the thigh rather than the ischial tuberosity. Advanced attachment systems, such as vacuum and lanyard systems, provide better fixation. Lightweight materials such as carbon fibre and silicone inner sockets increase wearing comfort. Digital engineering technologies improve precision and functionality, allowing prostheses to better match individual needs.
One of the most important innovations for thigh prostheses is the MPK - MCK (Microprocessor Controlled Knee). This electronic prosthetic knee uses sensors and microprocessors to monitor your gait in real time and automatically adjust the resistance of the knee. This ensures a much more natural gait and greater stability of the knee joint.
Benefits of the MCK include:
In addition to the MCK, we offer completely brand-independent advice on the latest generation of prosthetic feet. These include sports feet, as well as multi-axial combinations that simulate natural movements. Innovative prosthetic feet improve functionality, comfort and adaptability. Bionic and microprocessor-controlled feet, such as the Lunaris, ensure maximum flexibility and coordination. 3D-printed feet and water-resistant designs increase versatility. At Amputee Care Centre, every prosthesis is unique, tailored to the anatomy, activity level, wishes and lifestyle of the prosthesis wearer.
A well-fitting liner and stump sock are very important for a comfortable thigh prosthesis. These help distribute pressure evenly, reduce pain points and keep the skin healthy and dry.
At Amputee Care Centre, we help you with solutions for:
With the appropriate combination of socket, liner and stump sock, you can get the most out of your prosthesis and increase your stability and freedom of movement.
At Amputee Care Centre, we combine high-tech prosthetic solutions with personalised, tailor-made support. With us, you can count on:
We guide you from the first introductory meeting to many years of daily use. This way, you get the most out of your thigh prosthesis!
Schedule a free introductory meeting with our prosthetists at Amputee Care Centre and discover which solutions suit you best. Together, we will take the first step towards an active and independent life with a transfemoral amputation.
Even if you already wear a thigh prosthesis, a free, no-obligation second opinion at our prosthesis centre can be very valuable. We will check the existing socket and fit and will give you no-obligation advice about the latest generation of upper leg prostheses, knees and feet. It often turns out that modern techniques can offer significant improvements in comfort and mobility, even after years of prosthesis use. However, if the prosthesis is already good, we will tell you so and see how else we can help you.
