Life after bilateral lower leg amputation

Life after bilateral lower leg amputation

About 2.5 years ago, I underwent a bilateral lower leg amputation. A drastic event that, despite everything, turned out to be my biggest chance to regain my life. Like many other fellow sufferers, I came out on top despite my age and not very good health.

In this story, I share my own path, with a special thank you to the Spronken company and the prosthetists at their Amputee Care Center. They literally and figuratively gave me solidity underfoot again and the encouragement to overcome myself.

The emotional and physical road back

After the amputation, the first phase was tough: processing loss, learning to accept a disabled body without lower legs and the often intense rehabilitation. The road to walking again was tough, but the feeling that this gave me new life and an opportunity to participate again kept me going. I obliged myself to stay positive. And after faking it for a while, I really became one. Every step became a victory, a triumph, literally and figuratively.

Why my prosthetists deserve a compliment

Customised technology and trust

At Spronken's Amputee Care Center you don't get a standard solution, but a personal approach. Femke and the prosthetists listened attentively to my daily routines, my moaning and my groaning. They kept motivating me with patience and lots of love and made me two top lower leg prostheses that felt really comfortable. Every stride was watched in the gait lab. Every walk was evaluated and analysed in the Spronken rehabilitation garden. I received constant follow-up and my prosthesis was adjusted several times until perfection was achieved. Even the smallest nuances were discussed. As a result, I always felt heard and they gave me the ‘customer is king’ feeling.

My life now

Today, I walk completely independently, cycle - yes, I cycle! - and have a more active lifestyle than before my amputation. The physical and mental recovery was a process, but the quality of life I received after amputation of my bad, vascular-affected feet was better than I had ever dared to hope.  And that was largely due to the excellent care and dedication of the people at Spronken.

Tips for those reading this

  1. Prepare for an emotional ride: loss is real, but so is recovery. Talk about it, share your story.
  2. Find a team that really listens: prostheses only work if they are technically correct and if you get good support.
  3. Keep moving: physically and mentally. Every day a step, however small, is a step forward.
  4. Choose aftercare: your first prosthesis is a beginning, not an end. Choose an orthopaedic company with good reputation and experience. You want to be helped by a team of people who stand by you and with whom you will feel good for the rest of your life.

Life after bilateral lower leg amputation

Living after bilateral lower leg amputation is a rediscovery of yourself. Thanks to my prosthetists at Amputee Care Center, I not only received two well-fitting leg prostheses, but also found my own mental strength again. My GP, home nurse and my physiotherapist also brought me back, step by step, physically and mentally. Now, 2.5 years later, I am mentally strong as well as physically fitter than in the past 10 years before my amputation surgery.

I hope my story inspires other amputees to also courageously find the path back to a healthy life and freedom. The people at the Amputee Care Center are happy to put you in touch with experts by experience. Feel free to ask me for questions, tips or experience exchange. Together we are stronger.
