MCK reimbursement and application procedure in Belgium

Are you insured in Belgium? Then you may be eligible for a full refund for a microprocessor-assisted knee replacement (MCK) through the RIZIV (National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance).

The Belgian government has been providing this reimbursement since 2021, provided that:

  • You have an amputation through or above the knee, or a double-sided amputation where at least one knee is missing.
  • You belong to activity group 3, 4 or 5.
  • You meet the medical, functional and technical conditions.

The application goes through a recognised rehabilitation centre, in collaboration with your prosthetist and a multidisciplinary team. This involves a number of steps: from an initial screening and test phase with various MCK models, to a final application to the NIHDI.

During a no-obligation introduction and free gait analysis at Amputee Care Center, we can assess together whether you are eligible for reimbursement.

When are you not eligible for an MCK?

You are not eligible for reimbursement of an MCK through the NIHDI if one or more of the situations below apply to you:

  • You are younger than 18 years old
  • Your socket does not fit properly or causes discomfort
  • You have serious heart or lung problems
  • You have neurological or muscular problems that impede your movement
  • Your stump is too short to fit the MCK correctly
  • Your body weight exceeds the MCK's permissible maximum
  • You would use the MCK in an environment where the system does not function optimally

Do you think you are not eligible? We are happy to look at alternatives together. More is often possible than you think.

What is the application process for a microprocessor-controlled knee replacement?

The application process for an MCK in Belgium follows clear steps, always in collaboration with a recognised rehabilitation centre:
1.    Screening & inspection of your socket
2.    Start measurement with your current knee replacement
3.    Test phase with one or more MCK models
4.    Optional training in the rehabilitation centre
5.    Second measurement with the MCK
6.    Preparation and submission of your file to the NIHDI
7.    Approval & ordering of your final knee replacement
At Amputee Care Center, we guide you step by step - from first contact to delivery of your MCK.
