Electronic knee fully reimbursed in Belgium

In Belgium, reimbursement or reimbursement of an electronic knee is regulated through the National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance (NIHDI). Since 1 February 2021, the electronic knee will be fully reimbursed for a selected group of people with an upper leg amputation. This is nice, because previously this was not the case and an electronic knee is an expensive prosthesis and therefore not an option for everyone.

The ACC team helps prosthesis wearers affiliated with a Belgian mutual health organisation or insurer with the administrative application for reimbursement or reimbursement and accompanies the prosthesis wearer with the testing of the latest electronic prosthetic knee.
We are happy to help you compile your file and guide you through the entire process.

Who is eligible for electronic knee reimbursement in Belgium?
In Belgium, the NIHDI determines your eligibility based on:

  • Medical necessity: A doctor-specialist determines whether an electronic knee is essential for your mobility.
  • Activity level: If you have an active lifestyle where you regularly walk or move in different areas, you are more likely to qualify.
  • Safety: If you struggle with stability or fall more frequently, an electronic knee may be an appropriate solution.

How does applying for reimbursement in Belgium work?

  1. Prepare medical records: Your doctor or rehabilitation specialist compiles a file with medical information and arguments for the need for an electronic knee.
  2. Approval of the advisory doctor: An independent doctor from your health insurance fund will assess the application.
  3. Trial period: In some cases, you may test the electronic knee first to determine whether it meets your needs.

Electronic knee leg prosthesis reimbursement in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, electronic knee leg prosthesis reimbursement is via the basic health insurance, with the health insurer assessing the application. The ACC team helps Dutch prosthesis wearers with the administrative application for reimbursement. We also assist the prosthesis wearer with testing the latest electronic prosthetic knee.

Who is eligible for reimbursement electronic knee in the Netherlands?
Strict conditions also apply in the Netherlands. You are eligible if:

  • A medical indication (MI) shows that an electronic knee is necessary for your mobility.
  • The knee has a clear added value compared to a standard prosthesis.
  • Your activity level and daily use suit the functionality of an electronic knee.

How does applying for reimbursement electronic knee in the Netherlands work?

  1. Specialist advice: Your rehabilitation doctor will draw up a medical recommendation and may refer you to an orthopaedic instrument maker.
  2. Trial period: You are given the opportunity to try out the knee and have it assessed to see whether it meets your expectations.
  3. Health insurer's approval: Your insurer decides whether to reimburse you for the prosthesis based on the medical file and the trial results.

What is reimbursed by your health insurer?

  • The cost of an electronic knee is usually, after approval, fully reimbursed from the basic insurance.
  • You only pay your health insurer's deductible. The amount depends on the insurance you have taken out.
  • Maintenance and replacement may be arranged separately through supplementary insurance. Annual maintenance or check-ups are usually free of charge at Amputee Care Center, even if the prosthesis was not purchased from us.

We have decades of experience guiding applications to Dutch health insurers. We are therefore an official partner of almost all insurers in Belgium and the Netherlands. Let us help you make the process as smooth as possible for you.

How long does the electronic knee reimbursement application take?

In both Belgium and the Netherlands, applying for reimbursement or refund can take several weeks to months, depending on the assessment and trial period, among other things. At Amputee Care Center, we do everything we can to ensure that your application is processed as quickly as possible. We also make sure that the maximum benefit is obtained from your insurance.

What happens if my application for reimbursement is rejected?

In the event of a rejection by the health insurer or health insurance fund, we will help you with appeal procedures if we believe you are entitled to the reimbursement. In Belgium, you can apply for a reassessment via your mutual health insurer. In the Netherlands, it is possible to lodge an objection with your health insurer.

How often should an electronic knee be replaced?

On average, an electronic knee has a renewal period of 5 to 7 years, provided annual maintenance is applied. We do this for you free of charge at Amputee Care Center. It is part of the warranty. When the renewal period is over, you can reapply for reimbursement for a new leg prosthesis with an electronically controlled prosthetic knee.
