What does a myoelectric arm prosthesis cost?

Without the intervention of an insurer or mutual society, the price is between €30,000 and €70,000 or more, depending on:

  • The model chosen (Michelangelo, Bebionic, Hero, I-Limb, I-Digits and others)
  • Number of motors and grip options
  • EMG sensors and control system
  • Fit (socket, attachment)
  • Training, aftercare and service

For a personalised price estimate, you can always visit our certified prosthesis centre, where we work with top brands such as Ottobock, Össur, Open Bionics and Proteor.

What does a bionic arm prosthesis, such as the Hero Arm, cost?

The Hero Arm from Open Bionics is one of the most affordable bionic arms on the market. In Belgium, this bionic arm is often fully reimbursed by the national health service. So you don't have to pay extra. In the Netherlands, reimbursement depends on your insurance.  The Amputee Care Centre is a recognised and authorised supplier of bionic arm prostheses.

Arm prostheses at Amputee Care Center in Belgium

In Belgium, even our most advanced arm prostheses are often fully reimbursed by the health insurance, including adjustments, training and follow-up. We are a certified supplier of leading brands such as Ottobock, Össur, Open Bionics and Proteor, which guarantees top quality and security.

Application procedure in Belgium

The health insurance fund assesses and approves the reimbursement. In addition, the prosthesis wearer must undergo tests to evaluate whether he or she can handle a myo-electric or bionic arm prosthesis. These tests are carried out at a recognised rehabilitation centre, such as rehabilitation centre Geel, Valida Brussels, and others. We will guide you through the testing and apply for approval.

Applying for an arm prosthesis at Amputee Care Center in the Netherlands

We also offer a complete range of arm prostheses in the Netherlands. Reimbursement is through the basic insurance, but the exact coverage depends on your insurer.

Obtaining a myo-arm prosthesis in the Netherlands can be a challenging process, especially since we have to deal with different types of healthcare policies and contracts with health insurers.  The Dutch department of the Amputee Care Center by Spronken will be happy to guide you through the application for reimbursement or authorisation.

Contracted care

If your health insurer has a contract with Spronken Orthopaedics in the Netherlands, the company behind the Amputee Care Center, an SEHM-approved prosthetic supplier, this means that agreements have been made regarding the delivery and reimbursement of your prosthesis.

What does this mean for you?

A Dutch doctor-specialist, such as a rehabilitation doctor, will prepare a prescription for you. You can come directly to us with this prescription. Make an appointment with the Amputee Care Center. We will take care of (most of) the administration and arrange further communication with your health insurer.

Benefits:

  • Your arm prosthesis is usually fully reimbursed, provided it falls within your policy conditions.
  • There is minimal administrative hassle.

Non-contracted care

Does your health insurer have no contract with Spronken Orthopaedics in the Netherlands? Then it is important to know that this may affect reimbursement and the process.

Reputable orthopaedic companies, such as Spronken Orthopaedics, choose not to enter into a contract with certain health insurers because we want to continue offering our customised care without compromising on quality. Reimbursements often do not cover the cost of high-quality, innovative prosthetic solutions such as myoelekric and bionic arm prostheses.

By working without a contract, we retain the freedom to make the best choice together with the patient, tailored to each person's unique situation. This decision stems from a deep-seated commitment to people-centred, personalised care.

What does this mean for you?

You should ask your health insurer for permission in advance. The Amputee Care Center team will help you with this.  You can request permission by submitting the medical prescription from your doctor and a quotation (costs of your arm prosthesis) drawn up by us, Amputee Care Center of Spronken Orthopaedics in the Netherlands, to your health insurer.

You should note that the reimbursement for non-contracted care is sometimes lower. This may mean that you may have to pay part of the costs yourself.

Restitution policy

Many Dutch people have a restitution policy. This policy gives you the freedom to choose your own healthcare provider. You then choose a recognised, SEMH-approved, prosthetic centre (such as Spronken), regardless of whether it has a contract with your insurer. This is a great option! It gives you the chance to look for a prosthetist and prosthetic centre that suits you best yourself.

What does this mean for you?

You choose your own prosthetic supplier or prosthetist. You have the freedom to consult different orthopaedic consultant prosthetists. It is best to make an appointment for a free second opinion consultation at an SEHM approved supplier, such as the Amputee Care Center by Spronken.

After the consultation at our specialised prosthetics centre, you will receive a detailed price quote. Depending on your insurer, it is best to obtain prior authorisation, especially for more expensive or special prostheses.
