A common question we get at Amputee Care Center in Genk is whether our prostheses are reimbursed by Dutch health insurers. In the Netherlands, reimbursement of prostheses falls under the basic health insurance, with the type and extent of reimbursement depending on your coverage and supplementary insurance policies. Amputee Care Center by Spronken has been a recognised partner of Dutch health insurers for more than 60 years. We are happy to explain how denture reimbursements work.
In the Netherlands, reimbursement of prostheses falls under the Health Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet, Zvw). This means that basic insurances reimburse certain medical aids if they are medically necessary. A basic prosthesis usually falls under this. Advanced prostheses, such as myo-electric prostheses and bionic prostheses, may require a co-payment. In some cases, however, this may be part of supplementary insurance.
At Amputee Care Center (by Spronken), we have more than 60 years of experience assisting patients in the Netherlands. The prosthesis center is located in Genk (Belgium), just a few dozen kilometres from the Dutch border. We are happy to help you apply for reimbursements and choose a prosthesis that suits your lifestyle and needs. Where can I get an arm or leg prosthesis faster? This is a question frequently asked by amputees looking for a new prosthesis. Dutch people often choose reimbursed arm and leg prosthesis care in Belgium because of shorter waiting times, personal approach and expertise. Belgian orthopaedic consultants and instrument makers are known for their innovative techniques, extensive fitting options and patient-centred approach. Moreover, care is often fully reimbursed through cross-border care regulations, such as EU Regulation 883/2004.
In addition, the Amputee Care Centre by Spronken also has branches in the Netherlands with specialised prosthetists in Tiel and Beek (South Limburg). This makes having a new prosthesis fitted at Amputee Care Center attractive for Dutch people who seek high-quality prosthetic treatment quickly without compromising on quality or prosthesis reimbursement.
In the Netherlands, you need a referral letter from a specialist, such as a rehabilitation doctor or orthopaedic surgeon, to apply for reimbursement for a prosthesis. Health insurers impose additional conditions for reimbursement, including the type of prosthesis and its functionalities. At Amputee Care Center by Spronken, we will help you apply and ensure that your medical records are submitted correctly for approval by your health insurer.
Depending on the type of prosthesis and advanced technologies, a co-payment may be applicable from health insurers. For basic prostheses, this contribution is relatively low or even zero, but for more advanced options, such as the myo-electric hero arm, an electronically controlled prosthetic knee and bionic prostheses, there may be additional costs. It is often possible to take out supplementary insurance that covers (part of) these additional costs.
Basic leg prostheses such as an upper leg, lower leg or foot prosthesis are usually fully reimbursed by the basic health insurance in case of medical necessity. These are functional prostheses that enable essential mobility. At the Amputee Care Center of Spronken Orthopaedics Netherlands, we fully customise your prosthesis, ensuring optimum comfort and fit. For advanced leg prostheses, such as thigh prostheses with an MCK-power electronic knee, there may be additional costs. In this case, we will be happy to help you apply for the maximum reimbursement.
There is also reimbursement for hand, finger and arm prostheses via the basic health insurance if there is a medical necessity. Therefore, for a simple mechanical prosthesis or a cosmetic prosthesis, no co-payment is usually required and all costs are reimbursed directly to the Amputee Care Center, so you do not have to worry about the financial aspects of your prosthesis or that of your child.
For special arm prostheses, such as the hero-arm, the myo-electric arm prosthesis and other bionic prostheses, which work with electrical signals from the muscles, an additional contribution usually does apply. These prostheses are often (much) more expensive and have more functionalities, but most health insurers only cover part of them. The remaining costs are at your own expense, unless (partly) covered by supplementary insurance.
Special rules apply to children. A child prosthesis will have to be replaced more often than an adult prosthesis. The reason is simply that children are still growing. The basic health insurance in the Netherlands usually covers these replacements, but the exact conditions and reimbursement may differ between health insurers. The renewal period that applies here is usually two to three years.
Children's prostheses also often do require a co-payment for advanced prostheses, such as a bionic arm. However, many parents opt for this anyway, as it gives the child many more options. However, the extra cost may mean that this may not be a financial option for everyone.
At Amputee Care Center, we are happy to provide personal advice and support when choosing a child's prosthesis and applying for reimbursements.
Sports prostheses are not covered by the basic health insurance in the Netherlands. This is because these prostheses are not considered a medical necessity. Yet amputees regularly choose to buy a sports prosthesis to improve their mobility and sports performance. Want to know more? Then read on in our article: What does a sports prosthesis cost?

In the Netherlands, osseointegration, in which a prosthesis is attached directly to the bone, is fully reimbursed by health insurance. The implant placed during surgery lasts for life. However, the connector that attaches the prosthesis to the implant needs to be replaced every three to five years. The cost of this is also covered by health insurance.
Regular maintenance is hugely important for maintaining the functionality and longevity of the prosthesis. In the Netherlands, maintenance and repair costs are only partially reimbursed by your health insurance company. This depends on your coverage and the conditions of your health insurer. At Amputee Care Center, however, we offer a free annual check-up and gait analysis to keep your prosthesis in optimal condition.
For larger repairs or a replacement, additional insurance may provide the necessary cover. However, it is important to check this carefully beforehand in your health insurer's policy conditions.
